Chris Evans Weighs in on Marvel Future as ‘Doomsday’ Release Reportedly Abandoned

As Marvel Studios continues to map out the future of its cinematic universe, Avengers: Doomsday (2026) has quietly taken shape as one of the franchise’s most significant upcoming installments—despite the studio maintaining a firm lid on official details.

Even so, new insights suggest the film could take the MCU in an unexpected direction.

Currently in post-production, the project has generated encouraging chatter within industry circles. Insider Jeff Sneider shared a status update on The Hot Mic, indicating that while the film still requires additional work, early reactions have been promising.

“It's still very much in post. Let me see if I have anything on that. I did check in before the show, just in case. I did get a little something. Avengers is in post, and they still have a lot of pick-ups to do, but the buzz is good. The buzz is good. You're going to like it,” Sneider said. “You're going to like the movie.”

That update aligns with reports of ongoing reshoots taking place in the U.K., hinting at a production still refining its final shape. At the same time, insiders point to a narrative that could stretch beyond the MCU’s established framework, potentially setting the stage for what many are calling the Mutant Saga.

Helping guide that transition are Joe and Anthony Russo, whose previous work on Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Captain America: Civil War (2016), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), and Avengers: Endgame (2019) helped define the MCU’s most successful era. Their return suggests Marvel is aiming to recapture that scale and cohesion.

Footage tied to Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025) has already teased a wide-ranging ensemble. Among those featured were Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, several X-Men characters, Wakandan leaders, including Letitia Wright’s Shuri, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach’s Ben Grimm from The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025).

According to Variety, internal reception has been encouraging as well. “Executives are pleased with what they’ve seen for the December release, and rival studio heads privately predict Doomsday will be the year’s highest-grossing film,” the outlet notes.

However, Marvel and Disney are not positioning the film as a single turning point for the brand. Despite recent theatrical disappointments such as Thunderbolts* and Captain America: Brave New World in 2025, the studio appears committed to a broader, long-term strategy.

“Recent Marvel films Thunderbolts* and Captain America: Brave New World fell far short at the box office,” Variety writes. “Some pundits argue the future of the superhero franchise may ride on the hotly anticipated Avengers: Doomsday, although sources inside the company’s film division believe the health of the MCU does not hinge on an individual title.”

There are also logistical hurdles to consider. Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Three (2026) will dominate IMAX screens for several weeks, creating a potential obstacle for Doomsday’s theatrical run. In light of that, reports have surfaced suggesting Disney could move the release date up to December 11, 2026, though confirmation is still pending.

Narrative details remain scarce, but early reports indicate that Victor Von Doom will play a central role, crossing paths with characters like the Fantastic Four, Thor, and Loki as Multiversal incursions escalate. Both Doomsday and its sequel, Secret Wars, are expected to function as a reset point for the MCU, potentially reshaping its reality.

One of the most talked-about developments is the return of Robert Downey Jr., this time stepping into the role of Doom after previously defining the franchise as Tony Stark. The character was teased in the post-credits scene of The Fantastic Four: First Steps alongside Franklin Richards, setting the stage for his larger involvement.

Chris Evans is also back in the fold, with the actor confirming he will appear in Avengers: Secret Wars. Production on that film is expected to begin soon. “I can tell you that I start work on the next one in a couple of months,” Evans said. “So I'm in the next one, there's that.”

How Doom will be portrayed remains an open question. Some theories suggest a character operating in morally ambiguous territory, potentially more of a rival force than a traditional villain. Others point to possible connections with the aftermath of Steve Rogers’ actions in Avengers: Endgame, though none of this has been officially confirmed.

Speculation continues to swirl around potential cameos and crossovers. One rumor suggests an opening sequence featuring Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man facing off against X-Men characters, including Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. While unconfirmed, the idea reflects the ambitious scope Marvel may be pursuing.

Not every insider response has been fully positive. Daniel Richtman shared a more cautious perspective, writing, “I have mixed feelings about the direction they’re taking with Avengers: Doomsday/Secret Wars. Some of it sounds super epic, but there are certain decisions I don’t want to spoil that I really don’t understand, and I think they’re going to make people REALLY angry,” the insider said.

With a planned release following Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026) in July, Avengers: Doomsday will serve as a major test of Marvel’s evolving storytelling approach. As the franchise continues to expand, the film’s reception could offer insight into how audiences respond to its next phase.
