Few actors are as closely tied to multiple pop culture characters as Jim Carrey.
Across the 1990s and early 2000s alone, the actor became synonymous with characters like Ace Ventura, The Mask, and The Grinch. Most recently, he portrayed Dr. Robotnik in Paramount’s hugely successful Sonic the Hedgehog film series.

But for DC fans, one of his most memorable performances remains Edward Nygma — better known as The Riddler — in Batman Forever (1995).
Carrey’s manic, neon-colored interpretation of Gotham’s puzzle-obsessed villain became one of the defining elements of Joel Schumacher’s wildly theatrical sequel alongside Tommy Lee Jones as Two-Face. Now, however, the iconic Batman villain has officially been recast in another major DC project.
The newly released LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight from TT Games and Warner Bros. Games features Matthew Curtis as the latest actor to take on The Riddler. The game itself acts as a celebration of Batman’s long history across film, comics, television, and gaming while featuring multiple classic Gotham villains and heroes.

The cast also includes Shai Matheson as Batman, Matt Berry as Bane, Colin McFarlane as Jim Gordon, Rich Keeble as Two-Face, and Ewan Bailey as The Joker.
Set inside an open-world Gotham City, the game pulls inspiration from virtually every major Batman era, including the films of Tim Burton, Joel Schumacher, Christopher Nolan, Zack Snyder, and Matt Reeves.

As for whether Carrey could ever return as The Riddler, fans have continued speculating for years. But never say never. After all, he reprised his role as Dr. Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024) despite previously suggesting he might step away from acting, proving he is still open to revisiting beloved characters under the right circumstances. Now, he's set to return in the fourth Sonic film in 2027.
With nostalgia-driven legacy sequels continuing to dominate Hollywood — particularly in the superhero genre — the possibility of Carrey returning to Gotham someday no longer feels impossible. Meanwhile, there are rumors that Universal Pictures is developing a new live-action Grinch movie, but whether or not Carrey would return remains to be seen.
For now, though, LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight offers Batman fans an entirely new take on one of the Dark Knight’s most iconic villains.
