Jim Carrey Discusses Surprise Return in Upcoming Sequel: “I Need the Money”

Jim Carrey has played many unforgettable roles throughout his illustrious career, but few are as synonymous with the holidays as his portrayal of the Grinch in Ron Howard’s 2000 adaptation of How the Grinch Stole Christmas. With its blend of humor, heart, and Carrey’s transformative performance, the film became an instant holiday classic.

The film set a box office record for holiday films at the time, raking in $346 million globally. Based on Dr. Seuss’s beloved 1957 storybook, the movie showcased Carrey’s comedic genius, earning him a Golden Globe nomination. Fans adored his zany antics and heartfelt moments, solidifying the Grinch’s place as a staple of holiday cinema.

But could the green grouch of Mount Crumpit return for another mischief-filled outing?

Carrey has never shied away from reprising his iconic characters. After his success in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994), he returned for Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls (1995). He also returned as Lloyd Christmas in 2014’s Dumb and Dumber To. More recently, Carrey’s portrayal of Dr. Robotnik in the Sonic the Hedgehog movies brought his signature eccentric energy to a new generation of fans. Now, he’s back again as the moustache-twirling villain.

However, you might remember that Carrey hinted at his retirement after Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in 2022, implying that he’d unlikely be returning for a third film. But at the red carpet premiere for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, when asked by an AP Entertainment reporter why he’s reprising his role as Dr. Robotnik, Carrey candidly said, “I bought a lot of stuff and need the money, frankly.”

he had mixed feelings about his role as the Grinch, describing the process as “extremely excruciating,” referencing the extensive makeup and physical demands. However, with advancements in motion-capture technology, Carrey expressed curiosity about a modern approach to a sequel, saying, “[and] now, with motion capture and things like that, I could be free to do other things. Anything is possible in this world.”

Fans’ nostalgia and Carrey’s ability to bring larger-than-life characters to vivid life make a sequel or reboot–especially one told in motion capture– is an enticing proposition.

The Grinch’s enduring popularity isn’t limited to Carrey’s portrayal. Benedict Cumberbatch brought a new dimension to the character in 2018’s animated The Grinch, which proved a box office hit in its own right. However, Carrey’s version remains unmatched for its physicality and improvisational humor.

The Future of The Grinch

Universal Pictures has reportedly floated the idea of revisiting Carrey’s Grinch in some capacity, but no concrete plans have emerged. While Carrey gears up for his third appearance as Dr. Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, fans are left wondering if the actor might someday revisit the grumpy green recluse who stole Christmas—and their hearts.

With modern technology offering new possibilities for how the Grinch could be brought to life, perhaps Carrey’s reluctance could be overcome. Until then, audiences can only hope that his answer to a return isn’t a resounding “Bah, humbug!”

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 releases in theaters on December 20.
