While Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000) remains a holiday staple, there’s no denying that the film’s unsettling visuals and chaotic tone continue to raise eyebrows. And now, Universal Studios Orlando has brought this eerie magic to life in its annual “Grinchmas” celebration, complete with appearances from a Grinch very closely resembling Jim Carrey’s interpretation.

This year’s Grinchmas event kicked off with an updated meet-and-greet experience at Islands of Adventure. Guests visiting Honk Honkers—a candy store transformed into the Grinch’s Mount Crumpit lair—can snap photos with the green mischief-maker. Unlike the animated Grinch of 2018 (starring Benedict Cumberbatch), this Grinch retains the chaotic energy and striking prosthetic design of Carrey’s 2000 version. The resemblance is no accident. What’s striking about this homage is how it doubles down on the film’s offbeat, slightly creepy vibe.

Even the Whos roaming Seuss Landing—complete with exaggerated makeup and quirky costumes—seem to echo the unsettling and surreal charm of director Ron Howard’s Whoville from the 2000 film. That’s right—The Grinch is now back at Universal Studios.

The Grinchmas festivities also include The Grinchmas Who-liday Spectacular, a live retelling of the classic tale with a modern twist. Fans of Carrey’s film will notice subtle nods to his version of the Grinch, from physical mannerisms to his sarcastic quips.

This event continues to blur the line between festive fun and quasi-nightmarish fever dream—a quality that has cemented the 2000 film as a cultural touchstone. For some fans, the unsettling aesthetic is what makes How the Grinch Stole Christmas so memorable. For others, it’s proof that this holiday film was never really for kids. Either way, Grinchmas at Universal proves that Jim Carrey’s Grinch is as iconic—and creepy—as ever.
