It’s Official: Universal Orlando Dismantles Iconic Dinosaur During Extended ‘Jurassic Park’ Closure

Universal Orlando Resort isn't just giving Jurassic Park River Adventure a routine tune-up. As crews continue working behind construction walls at Islands of Adventure, newly released photos reveal that some of the attraction's most recognizable dinosaurs and show elements have been dismantled during the lengthy refurbishment.

The images offer one of the best looks yet at the project, although they also leave fans with more questions than answers. Universal has revealed very little about what is actually changing inside the attraction, making every construction update a topic of conversation among longtime guests.

While the full picture won't become clear until the ride reopens, here's what the latest developments tell us.

One of Universal's Most Beloved Attractions

Few attractions have represented the Jurassic Park franchise as well as Jurassic Park River Adventure. Since Islands of Adventure welcomed its first guests in 1999, the attraction has remained one of the park's defining experiences.

Inspired by Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park (1993), the ride begins as a peaceful sightseeing excursion before turning into a desperate escape after dinosaurs break free from containment. Every scene builds suspense until riders come face-to-face with the towering Tyrannosaurus rex moments before the final drop.

Although Jurassic World VelociCoaster introduced the newer film series to the land, River Adventure continues to celebrate the original movie. Its soundtrack, scenery, and classic dinosaur encounters still capture the feeling that made the first film so memorable.

Because of that history, even small construction updates have attracted significant attention throughout the refurbishment.

A Closure That Stands Out

Universal closed Jurassic Park River Adventure on January 5, 2026, and the attraction is currently scheduled to reopen on November 20, 2026.

That means the ride will remain closed for more than 10 months, making this one of its most extensive refurbishments since opening.

Naturally, fans expect more than fresh paint or basic maintenance.

After nearly three decades of operation, some of the attraction's animatronics and effects have become less consistent than they once were. Guests have occasionally encountered instances in which major dinosaur figures failed to perform their full range of movements, making a comprehensive refurbishment feel overdue.

The extended timeline gives Universal an opportunity to restore many of those effects while improving the attraction's long-term reliability.

Universal Isn't Saying Much

Despite months of construction, Universal has remained quiet about the exact scope of the project.

The company has not announced whether Jurassic Park River Adventure will receive any creative changes beyond the scheduled refurbishment.

That lack of information has fueled ongoing speculation.

One rumor suggests the attraction could eventually shift toward a Jurassic World theme instead of continuing to focus on Jurassic Park. At this point, though, Universal has not confirmed that possibility.

Other reports indicate the work centers on extensive ride-system improvements along with repairs and upgrades to aging animatronics and show scenes. If that's the case, guests may see a refreshed attraction that still preserves the story and atmosphere that have made River Adventure a favorite for so many years.

Construction Photos Show the Work Up Close

The newest construction images come from Bioreconstruct on X, whose aerial photography has followed the refurbishment from above.

Among the biggest discoveries is the attraction's Ultrasaurus figure. According to Bioreconstruct, crews appear to be working on new character animation. Recent images also show portions of the dinosaur's outer skin removed while technicians work on the internal components.

The photos also reveal construction activity around the paddock walls and surrounding environments, showing that the refurbishment extends well beyond individual dinosaurs.

Taken together, the images suggest Universal is performing substantial work throughout the attraction rather than limiting the project to cosmetic repairs.

If the internal systems are receiving upgrades, guests could notice a significant improvement when the ride returns.

Over the years, the Tyrannosaurus rex finale has occasionally operated without movement, reducing the impact of one of the attraction's biggest moments. The Parasaurolophus has also sometimes failed to emerge from the water during its signature scene, and several additional dinosaur figures have shown inconsistent operation.

Updating those systems could help restore the ride's original level of reliability while preserving the experience fans remember.

Waiting to See the Final Result

With several months still remaining before reopening day, plenty of questions remain unanswered.

What is clear is that Universal has taken apart major portions of one of Islands of Adventure's oldest attractions as crews continue working throughout the ride. The latest construction photos point toward an ambitious refurbishment, even if the company hasn't revealed every detail behind it.

Whether Jurassic Park River Adventure returns looking almost identical or includes noticeable changes inspired by Jurassic World won't be known until guests board again on November 20. Until then, each construction update offers another small clue about the future of one of Universal Orlando's most iconic attractions.
