Epic Universe has become one of Orlando's biggest vacation draws, attracting visitors eager to experience Universal's newest rides, explore immersive themed worlds, and see what all the excitement is about. For many families, months of planning go into a single day at the park, from choosing which attractions to ride first to deciding where to eat.
But there's one part of your itinerary you won't be able to control.

Florida weather has a way of changing plans in a hurry, and at Epic Universe, even a brief thunderstorm can have a much bigger impact than many first-time visitors expect. If lightning moves into the area, the park temporarily loses most of its headline attractions, leaving thousands of guests competing for far fewer experiences.
It's something worth knowing before you arrive.
Lightning Changes Everything
Most guests understand that outdoor roller coasters close during storms. What surprises many people is just how many attractions at Epic Universe fall into that category.
Out of the park's 10 major rides, seven temporarily stop operating whenever lightning is detected nearby.
Those attractions are:
- Stardust Racers in Celestial Park
- Hiccup's Wing Gliders in How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk
- Dragon Racer Rally in How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk
- Fyre Drill in How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk
- Mine-Cart Madness in SUPER NINTENDO WORLD
- Yoshi's Adventure in SUPER NINTENDO WORLD
- Curse of the Werewolf in Dark Universe
That's nearly three-quarters of the park's biggest rides becoming unavailable until weather conditions improve.
The closures aren't based solely on rainfall. A passing shower may not cause much disruption, but lightning in the area immediately changes the situation.
Universal's weather protocols are designed with guest safety in mind, which means outdoor attractions remain closed until conditions are considered safe for operations to resume.
Only Three Major Attractions Keep Running
As outdoor rides close, guests naturally begin looking for indoor experiences.
That leaves just three major attractions continuing to operate:
- Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry
- Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment
- Mario Kart: Bowser's Challenge
It doesn't take long for those rides to become the busiest places in the park.
Guests who were previously spread across Celestial Park, Dark Universe, Isle of Berk, and SUPER NINTENDO WORLD suddenly converge on the same attractions. Posted wait times can climb quickly, and indoor queues begin filling almost immediately after storms arrive.

Families Feel the Impact Too
The closures don't stop with thrill rides.
Outdoor playgrounds also close during lightning, removing one of the most popular places for younger children to burn off energy while parents take a break.
The carousel in Celestial Park also shuts down until weather conditions improve.
A handful of indoor shows continue operating, giving guests another option while they wait for storms to pass. However, those theaters can fill much faster than normal because so many visitors are searching for something to do indoors.
Restaurants, shops, and covered seating areas also become noticeably more crowded as guests wait out the weather.
It's easy for the entire park to feel much busier than it did only minutes before.
Afternoon Storms Are Part of Florida
Central Florida is famous for sunshine, but it's equally well known for afternoon thunderstorms.
During much of the year, especially in the summer, warm temperatures and high humidity create ideal conditions for storms to develop later in the day. Many arrive quickly, bringing heavy rain, thunder, and frequent lightning before moving on.
Sometimes the weather clears within half an hour.
Other times, storms continue to redevelop throughout the afternoon, extending ride closures well beyond the initial rainfall.
Even after skies begin to brighten, attractions may remain closed while Universal waits for lightning to move out of the area and completes the necessary safety checks before reopening rides.
A Little Planning Goes a Long Way
Guests can't control the weather, but they can adjust their plans.
If outdoor attractions are at the top of your list, it's usually smart to experience them earlier in the day when storms are less likely to develop. Waiting until late afternoon to ride Stardust Racers or Hiccup's Wing Gliders could leave you disappointed if lightning moves into the area.
Checking the Universal Orlando app throughout the day is another good habit. Attraction statuses update in real time, making it easier to adjust your plans as weather conditions change.
Instead of rushing from one closed ride to another, you can pivot to an indoor attraction, enjoy a meal, browse merchandise, or catch a show while waiting for rides to reopen.
Expect the Unexpected
One of the biggest lessons seasoned Orlando visitors learn is to stay flexible.
Florida weather can completely change the pace of a theme park day, and Epic Universe is no exception. When seven of the park's 10 biggest rides close because of lightning, operations look very different from what guests experienced earlier in the day.
Fortunately, these closures are usually temporary. Once lightning leaves the area and safety inspections are complete, attractions gradually reopen and crowds begin spreading back across the park.
That means a storm doesn't necessarily ruin your visit.
Still, understanding how weather affects Epic Universe before you arrive can help set realistic expectations and make it easier to adjust if the forecast suddenly changes.
After all, some of the park's biggest thrills depend on what the skies above Orlando decide to do next.
