DC’s Second Snyderverse Announces Surprise Batman Series

Batman’s presence across film, animation, and gaming continues to grow, with multiple projects now in development that signal a renewed focus on the Dark Knight across DC’s expanding multiverse.

A New Batman Series Has Been Announced

With live-action projects such as Robert Pattinson’s The Batman – Part II (2027) and the DCU’s planned film reboot The Brave and the Bold currently in development, Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios are now developing an Absolute Batman animated series based on the modern reimagining of the character from DC’s Absolute Universe imprint, written by Scott Snyder (no relation to Zack Snyder) with illustrations by Nick Dragotta.

The announcement was made during this year's Annecy International Animation Film Festival, as shared by The Hollywood Reporter.

The announcement adds another layer to a franchise already juggling competing interpretations of Batman, much like the way the Zack Snyder-led DC filmsMan of Steel (2013), Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), and Justice League (2021) — remain separate from the newly established DCU under James Gunn and Peter Safran.

The Absolute Universe, launched in 2024, offers a radically different take on familiar heroes such as Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman. In this continuity, Bruce Wayne is not a billionaire playboy but a working-class Gotham City native shaped by hardship, redefined through a grittier, more grounded lens.

The Absolute Batman comic has already proven commercially successful, becoming one of DC’s strongest-selling modern titles. So it's hardly surprising that it has now been tapped for animation under Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios.

According to the report, Scott Snyder will serve as showrunner and executive producer while Nick Dragotta is attached as producer, signaling a close adaptation of the comic’s tone and style.

Other Upcoming Animated Batman Projects

The move reflects DC’s broader strategy of expanding Batman across multiple interpretations simultaneously — from grounded live-action noir to stylized animated reinventions.

With the animated film Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall (2026) also releasing later this year as the first of three installments, as well as season two of the animated series Batman: Caped Crusader (2024), and multiple cinematic versions of Batman still active, DC’s Batman slate is becoming increasingly fragmented — and ambitious.
