Disney World Issues Urgent Transportation Warning: Popular Resort Perk Suspended

Paying extra for a Deluxe stay at Walt Disney World comes with certain expectations, especially when it comes to convenience.

Guests aren't simply booking a hotel room. Disney Resort properties come with several vacation perks, and complimentary transportation can be one of the most useful. Instead of driving everywhere, guests can rely on Disney to handle much of the travel around the resort.

But guests checking into one longtime Deluxe property won't have all the transportation options they would normally expect. A popular service has stopped operating, forcing visitors to use an alternative for trips away from the resort.

Disney Hotel Guests Get More Than a Room

Disney has several benefits designed specifically for guests staying at its Resort hotels.

Those advantages begin before guests even arrive. Resort guests receive earlier access to dining reservations and Lightning Lane selections, giving them additional opportunities to prepare for their park days.

Once the vacation begins, they can use Early Theme Park Entry to enter the theme parks 30 minutes before regular opening.

Eligible Deluxe Resort and Deluxe Villa Resort guests receive another benefit through Extended Evening Theme Park Hours. On select nights, qualifying guests can remain inside certain parks after they close to the general public.

Then there's transportation.

Depending on the resort and destination, Disney guests can travel by bus, boat, Disney Skyliner, or monorail without paying an additional transportation charge.

One Deluxe Villa Resort, however, has temporarily lost one of those options.

A Popular Transportation Service Has Stopped

The interruption affects guests staying at Disney’s Old Key West Resort.

The Sassagoula River Cruise, which normally carries guests between Old Key West and Disney Springs, is currently unavailable. The boat service is expected to remain closed through early August.

That means guests who planned to use the water route during their vacation will need to change those plans.

For some visitors, the loss could be particularly disappointing because the boat trip offers more than basic transportation. Instead of getting onto another bus after a long theme park day, guests can normally enjoy a slower journey along the water before reaching Disney Springs.

The service also adds another convenience to a property with deep Disney roots. Old Key West opened in 1991 as Disney Vacation Club's first resort and remains a Deluxe Villa Resort.

Thankfully, Disney still has another way to get guests where they're going.

Guests Can Still Reach Disney Springs

Old Key West's bus service continues to operate, providing resort guests with complimentary transportation to and from Disney Springs while the boats remain unavailable.

The bus provides the same basic connection, but it removes the flexibility guests normally have when choosing how they want to travel.

Visitors should also know that Disney has restrictions surrounding resort-bound transportation leaving Disney Springs.

Cast Members may check whether passengers are staying at a Walt Disney World Resort hotel before allowing them to board buses or boats headed toward Disney properties. Visitors, therefore, can't necessarily use Disney Springs as a starting point for exploring different Disney hotels if they aren't staying on property.

Eligible Old Key West guests should still be able to use the buses throughout the boat suspension. They should simply be prepared to have their resort status confirmed before boarding.

Deluxe Prices Make Convenience Important

Having to take a bus instead of a boat isn't likely to derail an entire Disney World vacation. Still, it can matter when guests are paying Deluxe-level prices.

Part of the appeal of Old Key West comes from the overall resort experience. Guests are paying for accommodations, amenities, location, and convenient transportation around Disney World.

The boat connection to Disney Springs contributes to that experience.

Guests who planned dinners, shopping trips, or evenings in the district may have expected to walk to the dock and cruise directly there. For those visitors, relying entirely on buses takes away one of Old Key West's more distinctive conveniences.

The transportation remains complimentary, but the experience isn't identical.

Guests Won't Have to Wait Forever

The current interruption isn't expected to become permanent.

Sassagoula River Cruise service is expected to return following the temporary closure. Until then, buses will remain the primary complementary option for traveling between Old Key West and Disney Springs.

Guests can still reach the district without paying extra, but they'll have fewer choices than usual.

For visitors arriving during the suspension, building bus transportation into their plans could prevent a surprise.

The scenic river trip will have to wait until service resumes.
