Few movies have had the cultural impact of Star Wars: A New Hope (1977). The film introduced audiences to Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Darth Vader, creating a galaxy that would become one of the most recognizable fictional worlds in history.
Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford, Alec Guinness, and James Earl Jones led the cast, and George Lucas’ action-packed fantasy space opera became a landmark in Hollywood thanks to its groundbreaking visual effects and enormous influence on blockbuster filmmaking.
Nearly 50 years later, its characters, imagery, music, and story remain central to the Star Wars franchise. Now, however, the original Star Wars is officially getting a new ending.

Star Wars Gets a New Version
Before fans assume Lucasfilm has rewritten the conclusion of A New Hope, there is an important distinction.
Disney, Lucasfilm, Welsh broadcaster S4C, and Creative Wales have announced the first-ever official Welsh-language version of the movie.
Titled Star Wars: Gobaith Newydd, the entire film has been redubbed in Welsh, meaning audiences will hear newly performed dialogue throughout the movie, including during its closing moments.

The actual story, visuals, editing, music, and events remain unchanged.
Welsh actor Osian Morgan takes over as Luke Skywalker, while Matthew Rhys voices Han Solo, Aimee-Ffion Edwards plays Princess Leia, and Rhys Ifans takes on Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Mark Lewis Jones voices Darth Vader, with Llŷr Ifans as C-3PO, Nia Roberts as Aunt Beru, Richard Harrington as Grand Moff Tarkin, Owain Arthur as Red Leader, and Rhodri Meilir as Gold Leader.
S4C has also shared an official teaser, giving fans unfamiliar with Welsh an idea of what to expect. It features the famous “A long time ago…” opening in Welsh before moving into the iconic opening text crawl.
Wales-born Lucasfilm Co-President Lynwen Brennan said, “Wales has such a rich history of storytelling and a beautiful lyrical language,” adding that she hopes Welsh-speaking audiences experience the movie with “the same emotional impact” as watching it again for the first time.
Star Wars: Gobaith Newydd premieres on S4C and its streaming platforms on December 25, 2026.
