New ‘Ghostbusters’ Movie Reportedly in Development at Sony

Sony Pictures could be preparing another live-action trip to the iconic New York firehouse, as a new report claims that a Ghostbusters movie titled Ghostbusters: Nightmare on 34th Street is in development, with a familiar name from recent family films attached to write the screenplay.

The rumored title is prompting questions about where the franchise might go next. Ghostbusters: Nightmare on 34th Street appears to reference Miracle on 34th Street, the 1947 Christmas movie set in New York. That connection could point toward a holiday-themed Ghostbusters story, although no plot details have been reported and there's no confirmation that the film will take place at Christmas.

Bizarrely, it also sounds like a play on the horror classic A Nightmare on Elm Street.

Of course, the franchise has visited the festive season before. Ghostbusters II (1989) unfolds around Christmas and New Year’s Eve. As for the horror side of things, Ghostbusters is certainly no stranger to “something strange.”

The news was first reported by industry insider Daniel Richtman (via Dark Horizons), who says Josh Miller is writing the film.

Miller’s previous credits include the Sonic the Hedgehog movies and the holiday action-comedy Violent Night, which starred David Harbour as a particularly combative version of Santa Claus. Sony has not commented on the report, so the project’s title, writer, and development status remain unconfirmed.

The reported movie would join several other Ghostbusters projects in development. Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation are preparing Ghostbusters: Night Shift, an animated series set in New York City in 1994, five years after Ghostbusters II. It follows young, untrained New Yorkers forced to take up Proton Packs when supernatural activity returns.

Jason Reitman, Gil Kenan, and Dan Aykroyd are among its executive producers.

For now, however, Nightmare on 34th Street remains a report rather than an official Sony announcement.
