We're still three months away from the premiere of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, but fans are already concerned about Season 2 – and according to HBO boss Casey Bloys, we may have longer to wait than thought.
HBO first started filling out its Harry Potter cast in spring 2025. John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, Paapa Essiedu, and Nick Frost were announced for Albus Dumbledore, Minerva McGonagall, Severus Snape, and Rubeus Hagrid in April, followed on May 27 by Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton, and Alastair Stout as Harry, Hermione, and Ron.
Filming officially began in July at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, where the original Harry Potter movies were also made. Season 1, adapting Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, had wrapped by May 2026, ready for its December release slot, with the production then turning its attention to Season 2.
But it seems like we shouldn't expect Season 2 to follow a similar timeline.
HBO Boss Dashes Hopes of Season 2 in 2027
HBO Boss Casey Bloys recently discussed the Harry Potter production schedule with Deadline.
Bloys confirmed that while early production is underway on their adaptation of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, it likely won't be released next year.
“We’re trying as hard to bring it back as quickly as possible,” Bloys said when asked whether the franchise would maintain a “yearly cadence.” He added, “It’s not going to be two years [between seasons], but we’re trying hard to keep it as compressed as possible.”
When initially announced, the plan was for the series to run over the course of a decade, following Harry from his first year at Hogwarts through to his seventh and final year (which, fans will know, he doesn't actually spend at Hogwarts).
However, Bloys has remained coy on whether this remains true.
“Who knows?” he said. “Each book is a huge event. I’m right now thinking about season by season as far as what it all adds up to.”
Bloys' reluctance to confirm a release timeframe for Season 2 isn't entirely surprising considering recent reports.
In early September, The Sun claimed that scripts for the Chamber of Secrets adaptation had been scrapped and were still being rewritten, pushing filming from its planned summer start into October. HBO has not confirmed the report (although Deadline reported that filming is now underway).
When Harry Potter was officially renewed in May, the studio said production on Season 2 would begin in the fall, with overlapping schedules designed to keep the gap between installments as short as possible.
Casting, meanwhile, is already largely complete.
Kit Harington will play Gilderoy Lockhart – the hopeless new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher – after replacing Superman (2025) actor Nicholas Hoult, while Bonnie Hill takes over as Ginny Weasley following Gracie Cochrane's exit. Lenny Rush and Billy Barratt will play Dobby and Tom Riddle, respectively, with Rafe Spall, Molly Hewitt-Richards, and Jasper Ambrose joining as Arthur Weasley, Moaning Myrtle, and Colin Creevey.
