Gizmo is officially headed back to theaters, but fans hoping for a quicker reunion with the famous Mogwai just received some disappointing news.
Warner Bros. has offered its first small glimpse at Gremlins 3 (2028), bringing Gizmo back on screen after decades away from theaters. Unfortunately, that first look came with a catch. The long-awaited sequel is now arriving much later than originally planned.
Fans who expected the franchise to return in 2027 will instead have to wait until fall 2028.
Warner Bros. Brings Gizmo Back
The latest update arrived in the form of a short teaser from Warner Bros., and the studio didn't need much footage to get longtime fans talking.
Gizmo appears, peeking out of a backpack, offering audiences their first taste of what's to come. The teaser doesn't reveal anything substantial about the story, but seeing the beloved Mogwai again immediately connects the new movie to the franchise's past.
Then comes the important part.
Warner Bros. ends the teaser by revealing an October 6, 2028, theatrical release. The accompanying caption makes the date clear: “10.6.28. Only In Theaters.”
For fans, it's a mixture of good and bad news. Gizmo is back, and Warner Bros. has committed to another theatrical movie. Getting there, however, will take considerably longer than previously expected.

The Original 2027 Release Is Gone
When Warner Bros. Discovery announced the new movie in November 2025, the company originally set November 19, 2027, as its release date.
That plan would have brought Gremlins 3 (2028) into theaters shortly before Thanksgiving and the holiday season. Instead, Warner Bros. has moved the sequel to October 6, 2028.
That's a delay of almost 11 months.
The studio hasn't publicly provided a specific explanation for the move, leaving fans with a new date but few details about why the additional wait became necessary.
The delay feels particularly significant for a franchise that has already been missing from theaters for decades. By the time the new movie arrives, 38 years will have passed since Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990).
Fortunately, some familiar names are helping bring Gizmo back.
The Original Movie Has a Major Connection to the Sequel
Chris Columbus will play an even larger role in Gremlins 3 (2028) than he did in the movie that started it all.
Columbus wrote the screenplay for Gremlins (1984), while Joe Dante directed the film. This time around, Columbus will direct and produce the new sequel.
Steven Spielberg is returning as an executive producer, having previously held that role on the earlier movies.
The screenplay has also gone through changes. Hannah Marks is writing the current draft, building from an earlier screenplay by Columbus, Zach Lipovsky, and Adam B. Stein.
One question remains unanswered: Who will appear alongside Gizmo?
Warner Bros. hasn't announced any returning human cast members. Still, one original star has already attracted attention.
Zach Galligan played Billy Peltzer in both Gremlins (1984) and Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990). After Warner Bros. released the new teaser, Galligan reacted on social media with a looking-eyes emoji.
His reaction doesn't confirm Billy's return, but it certainly gives longtime fans something to discuss while they wait for casting news.
Why Fans Have Waited So Long for This
The excitement around another movie makes sense considering how distinctive Gremlins (1984) remains more than four decades later.
The original follows Billy after his father gives him Gizmo, a mysterious Mogwai, for Christmas. Caring for him requires following three rules: avoid bright light, don't get him wet, and never feed him after midnight.
Of course, those rules don't hold for long.
After Gizmo gets wet, he produces additional Mogwai. Those creatures eventually become destructive Gremlins, throwing Kingston Falls into chaos.
The movie combined horror, comedy, Christmas imagery, creature effects, and darker moments into an unusual mix. Gizmo became the lovable center of the story, while the Gremlins brought chaos everywhere they went.
Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990) pushed the concept even further, embracing more comedy and introducing an even stranger assortment of creatures.
Now, that long history makes the next chapter feel even bigger.

Warner Bros. has finally shown fans that Gizmo is coming back, but the reunion won't happen in 2027.
The new October 6, 2028, date adds almost 11 months to an already lengthy wait. With Columbus directing and producing, Spielberg returning as executive producer, and Gizmo appearing in the first teaser, the sequel is moving forward.
