Universal Orlando Confirms Major Change to Iconic Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

Universal Orlando Resort has plenty of reasons to celebrate this Christmas season, but its latest announcement might be one of the most surprising developments yet.

As the resort prepares to welcome holiday crowds, a familiar character is getting an opportunity that no other Universal Orlando character has received before.

And this time, the celebration won't be limited to the theme parks.

Universal has confirmed that Earl the Squirrel will appear in the 100th Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, giving the resort its first-ever dedicated balloon in the famous New York City event.

The announcement is especially exciting for longtime Universal visitors who remember when Earl was nothing more than a small Christmas tree decoration.

A Universal Orlando Favorite Is Heading to Manhattan

On November 26, 2026, Earl the Squirrel will officially make his Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade debut.

The giant balloon will travel through the streets of Manhattan as part of the parade's historic 100th celebration.

Earl will join a lineup that includes other recognizable characters, such as Bluey and Sorcerer Mickey.

Universal Orlando is also sending more than just its newest balloon.

A special parade unit will accompany Earl, complete with backup dancers, balloon handlers, and a dancing acorn.

For a resort that already has a longstanding relationship with Macy's, the announcement represents a significant first.

Universal Studios Florida has hosted its own holiday parade featuring Macy's balloons for years, but the Orlando resort has never had a dedicated balloon in the Thanksgiving Day Parade itself.

That makes Earl's debut an important addition to Universal's holiday history.

How a Real Squirrel Became a Christmas Celebrity

Believe it or not, Earl's popularity began with a real squirrel causing problems at Universal Studios Florida.

Years ago, park employees discovered damaged electrical wires on the resort's Christmas tree.

They repaired the lights, only to find that the damage kept happening.

Eventually, technicians caught a squirrel chewing on the wires.

The animal was humanely relocated, but the story became a favorite among Universal team members.

Employees began placing a squirrel decoration inside the Christmas tree, creating a small detail that guests could discover during their holiday visits.

Over time, visitors started recognizing the squirrel, and Universal realized the character had developed a following.

In 2021, Earl officially became a costumed character, complete with themed merchandise.

His popularity continued growing, turning him into a recognizable Christmas mascot for Universal Studios Florida.

Universal also gave Earl a distinctive cartoon design, drawing inspiration from older animation styles and the winter clothing worn by Cousin Eddie in National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (1989).

It's hard to imagine that such a small inside joke would eventually lead to a giant parade balloon.

Yet that's exactly what's happening.

Earl's Balloon Is Coming to Universal Studios Florida

Fans won't have to travel to New York City to see Earl's new balloon.

Following his Thanksgiving appearance, the balloon will head to Universal Orlando Resort and join Universal's Holiday Parade Featuring Macy's.

The seasonal parade begins November 14 and continues through January 3, 2027.

However, guests should know that Earl won't appear during the opening portion of the event.

Because the balloon will first participate in the Thanksgiving Day Parade, it won't arrive at Universal Studios Florida until after November 26.

Visitors planning trips around Thanksgiving should keep that timing in mind.

Once Earl joins the celebration, he'll become another part of Universal's holiday entertainment alongside the parade's existing giant balloons, floats, and performers.

For guests who visit Universal Orlando every Christmas, the new addition offers something different to look forward to.

It also gives families another opportunity to enjoy a character whose popularity has grown almost entirely through the park's own holiday traditions.
