Disneyland Officially Closes 60-Year-Old Classic Ride, Guest Access Cut Off

Disneyland guests are running into an unexpected sight in Fantasyland this week, with construction walls blocking access to a ride that has entertained families for generations.

The barriers have appeared just as the resort prepares for its Christmas celebrations, leaving another popular attraction unavailable during the busy holiday preparations.

For anyone planning to visit in the coming days, the closure could mean missing an experience that has been part of Disneyland for 60 years.

However, the shutdown isn't permanent. Disney has already confirmed when the attraction will return, and visitors can expect a noticeably different experience when it does.

Disneyland Officially Closes Historic Fantasyland Ride

Disneyland Park closed “it's a small world” on October 30, 2026, temporarily removing the Fantasyland attraction from operation.

The ride opened at Disneyland on May 28, 1966, and celebrated its 60th anniversary earlier this year. Its history actually began before that, when Disney created the attraction for the 1964 New York World's Fair.

Since arriving at Disneyland, the boat ride has welcomed millions of visitors into colorful scenes featuring children from around the world.

Hundreds of animated figures, detailed costumes, and the familiar soundtrack have made it a favorite for generations of families.

For the moment, however, nobody can board.

Construction barriers now surround portions of the attraction's entrance and exit, preventing visitors from accessing the regular experience.

That doesn't mean Disneyland is replacing the ride or removing its familiar international scenes.

Instead, the company is preparing for an annual tradition that requires a temporary closure of the attraction.

Construction Walls Take Over Popular Disneyland Location

Crews began preparing “it's a small world” for Christmas even before its October 30 closure.

Holiday lights have reportedly started appearing on the building's exterior ahead of the shutdown.

Additional lighting has since appeared on the dolphin-shaped topiaries near the front of the attraction.

However, the changes don't stop with decorations.

Construction walls now block the regular entrance, while another barrier closes the exit pathway near the surrounding fence and the “it's a small world” Toy Shop.

Inside the merchandise location, Disneyland has also installed a curtain separating the shop from the attraction's exit.

Despite all this activity, the surrounding area had not received its complete Christmas decorations when the walls first appeared.

Crews are preparing “it's a small world” Holiday, the attraction's annual Christmas transformation.

The seasonal version retains the familiar boat journey while adding festive decorations throughout its international scenes, representing different cultures and holiday traditions.

Christmas music joins the recognizable theme song, while thousands of colorful lights cover the attraction's famous exterior.

After dark, the illuminated facade becomes another part of Disneyland's Christmas atmosphere.

It's a tradition many returning visitors look forward to, though installing everything requires the original ride to close temporarily.

Disney Confirms November 13 Reopening

Fortunately, Disneyland has already announced when visitors can experience the attraction again.

Disney confirmed that “it's a small world” Holiday will reopen on November 13, 2026, the same day the resort officially begins its Christmas celebrations.

That gives crews approximately two weeks to complete the seasonal makeover.

Visitors arriving before November 13 won't be able to experience the regular version, even if they planned to include it during their Fantasyland visit.

For families who enjoy the classic attraction, the timing could be frustrating.

Still, the confirmed reopening date makes it easier to plan around the temporary interruption.

When the attraction returns, visitors will board the familiar boats again, this time surrounded by Christmas decorations and seasonal music.

Disneyland's Christmas Celebrations Are Almost Here

The return of “it's a small world” Holiday is just part of Disneyland Resort's larger seasonal celebration.

Disneyland's holiday festivities officially run from November 13, 2026, through January 6, 2027, with experiences at Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure.

Along with Christmas decorations, visitors can expect seasonal entertainment, specialty foods, and holiday character appearances.

At Disneyland Park, Haunted Mansion Holiday continues its seasonal transformation inspired by The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993).

Meanwhile, Disney California Adventure will host Disney Festival of Holidays, celebrating cultural traditions through food and music.

Cars Land will also bring back its familiar Christmas decorations, giving Radiator Springs a festive appearance.

Of course, preparing for these celebrations can temporarily affect attraction availability, and “it's a small world” is a particularly visible example.

For now, construction walls remain around the 60-year-old ride.

The closure may interrupt some visits, but Disneyland has confirmed that the attraction will return November 13 with its annual Christmas makeover.
