Beloved Disney+ Show Canceled After Two Seasons — What Went Wrong?

The world of streaming has become a battleground for many fan-favorite series, with some shining brightly while others struggle to maintain their footing. In a landscape where new content constantly competes for attention, certain shows leave a lasting impression, capturing the imagination of viewers.

One such series, based on R.L. Stine’s iconic Goosebumps books, seemed poised to carve its own niche in the hearts of fans. As its story unfolded, the series gained traction with viewers, drawing them into its eerie world filled with chilling mysteries.

In the ever-evolving world of streaming, some series make a splash, only to disappear all too quickly. This is exactly what has happened with Disney+’s Goosebumps series, which was just canceled after two seasons. Based on R.L. Stine’s legendary book series that defined childhood horror for generations, the show had a promising start but now faces an uncertain future. Fans who enjoyed the spine-chilling thrills of this series may be left wondering: why was it cut so short, and what does the future hold for this beloved franchise?

The Goosebumps books, first published in 1992, have held a special place in the hearts of readers, sparking multiple adaptations into TV shows, films, and games. Disney’s reboot of the series was highly anticipated, especially as it paired with both Disney+ and Hulu to create a terrifyingly fun new iteration for a whole new generation.

But despite the promising start, the cancellation has left fans disappointed and speculating about what went wrong.

Season one of Goosebumps premiered in October 2023, bringing the creepy world of R.L. Stine to a new audience. Justin Long starred as Nathan Bratt, a high school teacher and struggling writer, who finds himself entwined in a haunting mystery at a house tied to a dark history. The series quickly became one of the most-watched shows on Disney+ during its premiere weeks. This success led to the confirmation of a second season in February 2024, offering fans more chills and thrills.

However, while season one resonated with viewers, the second season of Goosebumps faced a more lukewarm reception. Despite a slight increase in critical ratings, the show’s viewership numbers did not meet the high expectations set by the first season. The second season, Goosebumps: The Vanishing, which aired in January 2025, introduced David Schwimmer as Anthony Brewer, a botanist investigating the disappearance of his brother. This season was filled with eerie twists and turns, but ultimately, it struggled to capture the same excitement as its predecessor.

Despite impressive viewership numbers—75 million hours in the U.S. alone, plus 43 million more from international markets—Disney has decided not to move forward with a third season. According to an exclusive report from Variety, the decision to cancel Goosebumps was made despite the show’s relatively strong performance, with Sony Pictures Television, the producer of the series, reportedly planning to shop it to other outlets and explore different creative directions for the franchise.

The series’ cancellation fits into a broader trend at Disney+ under CEO Bob Iger’s leadership. Disney+ has been aiming for profitability after significant losses during Bob Chapek’s tenure, and with that goal in mind, Disney has become more selective about the content it chooses to renew. Goosebumps now joins a long list of canceled series, including Willow, National Treasure: Edge of History, and The Acolyte, signaling that not every fan-favorite show will make the cut.

For fans who were hoping for more episodes of Goosebumps, this decision is a tough one to swallow. Still, Disney has not revealed the full reasoning behind the show’s cancellation, especially considering it performed similarly to the first season. With no official comment from Disney on the matter, many fans are left wondering if other factors—such as shifting creative priorities or even budget concerns—played a role in the decision.

Although Goosebumps is no longer a part of Disney+’s future, the franchise itself still holds a strong position in popular culture. With decades of source material to draw from, including over 60 books, there’s always the possibility of new adaptations, reboots, or spinoffs emerging from the Goosebumps universe. Whether it’s on a different platform or in a new form, the legacy of Goosebumps seems far from over.
