More than a year ago, the world watched as Pirates of the Caribbean superstar Johnny Depp battled his ex-wife — Aquaman actress Amber Heard — in a Virginia courtroom. Depp was suing Heard for $50 million, claiming she defamed him when she wrote an OpEd for The Washington Post in 2018. In the OpEd, Heard never used Depp’s name, but claimed that she was the victim of domestic violence during the time they were married. Heard countersued Depp for $100 million, also claiming defamation.
The trial lasted for more than six weeks, and in the end, the jury decided that Heard and Depp had both defamed each other, but Heard was more at fault. The just awarded Heard $2 million, while Depp received a judgment of more than $10 million. Heard said that she wanted what she won to go to charity, and then got mad at Depp when he said he would donate to the charities of her choice instead of giving her the money first.
After the judgment was announced, it appeared that things were done and everyone moved on. Heard even moved out of the country and took a break from acting. Depp is still acting and is getting more jobs as people realize he was not the monster Heard claimed he was. However, just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water, the battle between Heard and Depp is back in the headlines.
According to court documents obtained by RadarOnline.com, Heard has requested that her legal fight against one of her insurance companies — New York Marine and General Insurance Co. — be dismissed. The insurance company is fighting the dismissal. After the defamation ruling, Heard and Depp came to an agreement and Heard paid Depp just $1 million, which was paid through another insurance company. However, Heard’s other insurance company is refusing to drop the case.
In a recent court filing, Heard said despite the settlement with Depp, New York Marine, and General refuses to drop the case – despite there being no issues to argue. She pleaded with the judge to dismiss the case.
Heard said “There is nothing left to dispute” but New York Marine “refuses to stipulate to dismissal of” its claims.
Her lawyer argued, “Currently, New York Marine faces no real or threatened economic harm from Ms. Heard, as she has withdrawn her claim for indemnity and is not seeking any defense costs from New York Marine unless and until this Court’s dismissal order is reversed on appeal.”
A judge has not yet ruled on Heard’s dismissal request. It is unknown as to why New York Marine refuses to dismiss the case against Heard, considering the money has already been paid and the fight between Depp and Heard is over.
