Disney’s The Little Mermaid has been winning hearts ever since its release. Featuring actress Halle Bailey in the lead role of Princess Ariel, the movie faced many controversies prior to its official theatrical debut due to the casting of Halle Bailey herself, among other changes Disney made to the film (like adding consent to the lyrics of a beloved song, to name a few).
While many are still upset with the film enough that they are trying to impact its performance in theaters, many fans are loving the movie for its contemporary retelling of this classic.

In the midst of this, one question seems to frequently surface, and it’s not about our leading lady, Princess Ariel, or Halle Bailey herself. It’s about one of her sisters; many are curious about Princess Indira.
Who is Princess Indira?
Per the Disney Fandom Wiki, Princess Indira is the second oldest child of King Triton’s (Javier Bardem) seven daughters. She is loosely based on Princess Alana, from the original animated The Little Mermaid, and is a princess of Atlantica and the ruler of Brinedive Sea.

Piecing together different aspects of Princess Alana’s personality and adding to the lore we found out in the books, The Little Mermaid: The Novelization, The Little Mermaid: Guide to Merfolk, and The Little Mermaid: Against the Tide, here’s a little more on her personality!
Princess Indira is said to be the most generous; she leads with “empathy, kindness, and goodness.” Princess Indira is also said to be skilled at diplomacy; she works well with the ministers of her court and is well-informed about her kingdom and others. Like her inspiration, Princess Alana (and unlike Princess Ariel), Princess Indira is said to despise humans after her mother’s death, taking after her father, King Triton.
Princess Indira is portrayed by Simone Ashley, the actress who most recently rose to fame for her role in the Netflix period drama Bridgerton.
The Little Mermaid live-action remake from Walt Disney Studios stars Halle Bailey as Disney Princess Ariel, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, the evil sea-witch, Javier Bardem as King Triton, Daveed Diggs as Sebastian, and Jonah Hauer-King as the dashing Prince Eric. Chicago filmmaker Rob Marshall directs the movie and has music from Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
