Marvel Studios is setting the stage for a defining moment as Earth’s Mightiest Heroes assemble once again, signaling a major turning point for the Avengers franchise.

With Avengers: Doomsday slated for 2026 and Avengers: Secret Wars following in 2027, the studio is attempting to recalibrate after several years of mixed reception. The strategy leans on returning creative leadership, expansive Multiversal storytelling, and a radical reshuffling of who drives the narrative forward.
The MCU’s recent era has been uneven. While 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home became a cultural and financial high point, films like Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023), The Marvels (2023), and Captain America: Brave New World (2023) prompted concerns over cohesion and long-term planning.

That backdrop explains why Marvel’s decision to rehire Joe and Anthony Russo carries weight. The filmmakers behind 2018 and 2019's Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame are returning to direct both upcoming Avengers films, reuniting with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige to chart a new course.
According to Feige and the Russos, Doomsday and Secret Wars are intended to act as a structural reset—clearing the board ahead of the Mutant Saga while redefining the MCU’s power dynamics.

Avengers: Doomsday arrives December 18, 2026, and features one of Marvel’s largest casts to date. Veterans like Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Sam Wilson’s Captain America (Anthony Mackie) appear alongside newer additions, including Florence Pugh's Yelena Belova and Reed Richards, played by Pedro Pascal.
The film also fully embraces characters from outside Marvel Studios’ original continuity. Patrick Stewart’s Professor X and other X-Men-era figures signal that the Multiverse is no longer a side concept, but the franchise’s backbone.

Perhaps the most headline-grabbing development is Robert Downey Jr.’s return—this time as Victor Von Doom. After concluding his run as Tony Stark in Endgame, Downey now steps into the role of Doctor Doom, teased during The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025) in a scene involving Franklin Richards.
Speculation suggests Doom may operate in a morally gray space, potentially fixated on Steve Rogers following the time travel fallout from Endgame. Marvel has kept details vague, fueling ongoing fan theories.

That secrecy was mirrored in Marvel’s early-2025 livestream, dubbed the “chair reveal.” The broadcast confirmed a wide roster including Bucky Barnes, Ant-Man, Shang-Chi, Loki, and Sue Storm, along with significant X-Men participation.
Several absences stood out.

Mark Ruffalo is not part of Doomsday, with Hulk instead expected in Spider-Man: Brand New Day on July 31, 2026. The lack of appearances by Captain Marvel, Deadpool, and Wolverine has intensified speculation about Secret Wars, particularly after confirmation that Ryan Reynolds is actively developing Deadpool 4.
Marvel later escalated anticipation by attaching teaser footage to 2025's Avatar: Fire and Ash, showing Steve Rogers, Thor, X-Men characters, Wakandans, and Ben Grimm encountering one another. Chris Evans’ presence confirmed Rogers’ continued importance.

Though Marvel remains silent on plot specifics, leaks persist. MyTimeToShineHello, via Comic Book Movie, claims the film opens with a Multiversal conflict.
“Apparently, the movie will open with Maguire's web-slinger battling the X-Men, ‘and particularly Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine,'” Comic Book Movie writes. “This somewhat corroborates claims we've heard about an Incursion destroying Sam Raimi's Spider-Man Universe, and it gives Maguire's Peter Parker a lot to fight for in this movie and Avengers: Secret Wars as he looks to bring back his loved ones.”

The same source praised the film’s scope.
“Avengers: Doomsday is not only the most epic Avengers movie, but it might be the most epic movie OF ALL TIME,” they wrote (via Comic Book Movie). “The opening scene alone tops any previous Avengers movie, and the final battle is just INSANE.”
Marvel has not confirmed any of this, but the December release window—recently lucrative for Avatar: Fire and Ash—underscores the studio’s confidence.

Additional rumors suggest Doom initially allies with the Fantastic Four to confront Incursions threatening multiple realities.
“Victor asks the Fantastic Four for help with the Incursions. They travel together with Steve Rogers to the MCU in their ship to warn everyone, then join forces to head to the X-Men universe–the source of the next Incursion that will destroy their Earths,” MyTimeToShineHello writes, via Comic Book Movie. “They have a plan to fix everything.”
“The scooper adds that the movie will see Steve Rogers and Thor teaming up to seek out Loki, presumably meaning they'll need to find him and the TVA as part of their likely doomed (pun intended) plan to save the Multiverse.”

According to Jeff Sneider on The Hot Mic, early reactions have been encouraging. “It's still very much in post. Let me see if I have anything on that. I did check in before the show, just in case. I did get a little something. Avengers is in post, and they still have a lot of pick-ups to do, but the buzz is good. The buzz is good. You're going to like it,” Sneider said. “You're going to like the movie.”
Reshoots are reportedly beginning ahead of Secret Wars. As Geek Tyrant reports:
While previous reports claimed Avengers: Doomsday reshoots were scheduled to begin in April, recent photos indicate production may have started early in London. No cast members were spotted, but crew wearing Avengers: Doomsday jackets were seen filming scenes staged in what appears to be World War II era London.
The footage could involve Steve Rogers and Hayley Atwell's Peggy Carter—or an alternate timeline entirely.
Marvel has also begun laying groundwork for Doom beyond live-action. An animated Marvel Super Heroes: What The–?! short offers a satirical look at Latveria, complete with Doomstadt, Doombots, and “Doomland,” reinforcing Doom’s grip on his nation through humor.
Whether that version of Doom carries over into Avengers: Doomsday remains an open question.
