It is a natural connection. A small group of committed people fighting off an evil empire bent on world domination. The Ukrainian people have clung to Star Wars as motivation and hope during its war with Russia. But now, Ukraine’s top general is taking it one step further by invoking his Force Ghost and even bringing Baby Yoda to the fight.

Russia’s state “news” has long reported that Ukraine’s top military leader, Commander-in-Chief Valeriy Zaluzhnyi, was killed by a Russian drone attack. Zaluzhnyi had not been seen in public for weeks, but Ukraine recently released a video with the date and time prominently showing. It revealed that Zaluzhnyi is alive and directing Ukraine’s current offensive against Russian troops.

And cue the internet response. Ukrainians on Twitter exploded joyfully, citing ghosts from Star Wars movies, including Yoda, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Anikan Skywalker, to explain Zaluzhnyi’s return to life.

But the real star of the video was a small badge in the center of Zaluzhnyi’s military uniform featuring Grogu from The Mandalorian. And then Twitter did its thing. “This is the way,” was trending across Ukrianian’s Twitter accounts, and some even started using Baby Yoda in memes and photos as he destroyed the Russian Army.

It’s easy to see why the Ukrainians would latch onto Grogu, A small but powerful Jedi who helped Din Djarin defeat his enemies and keep him safe.

Grogu isn’t the only character from the Star Wars universe to lend a hand to the Ukrainian people. Luke Skywalker himself, Mark Hamill, has long been a supporter of the Ukranian cause. He has helped to raise millions of dollars to support the Ukrainian military in buying drones to attack the Russian Army.

Hamill told the Associate Press:

A fairy tale about good versus evil is resonant with what´s going on in Ukraine. The Ukrainian people rallying to the cause and responding so heroically. It´s impossible not to be inspired by how they´ve weathered this storm. Here I sit in the comfort of my own home when in Ukraine there are power outages and food shortages and people are really suffering. It motivates me to do as much as I can.

Hamill also lent his distinctive voice to the Ukrainian Air-Raid system, which warned people of incoming Russian missiles and drones. He has also spent hours meeting with Ukrainian troops via Zoom to help support the cause in any way he can.

For the record, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that Zaluzhnyi is kept out of public view for safety reasons, and his location is only known by a handful of people in the Ukrainian government in Kyiv.

Russian President Vladimir Putin gave the order to invade Ukraine nearly 18 months ago from Moscow. Since then, Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities have killed more than 42,000 civilians. The Biden Administration has been sending weapons to support Ukraine. In this latest offensive, Russian forces are being pushed out of the Southern and Eastern parts of the country by the Ukrainian forces.
