Construction walls have been taking over the Disney Parks ahead of the summer season.
All eyes have been on the end of a Disney era—Splash Mountain is gone for good, and Tiana’s Bayou Adventure is stirring up soul-quenching tunes and visuals as we speak. While the log flume ride swap may seem like the biggest news at the Disney Parks, a few other noteworthy transitions are happening behind the scaffolds.
The Mouse’s First Mountain
Disney enthusiasts can’t picture the Disneyland Resort without the image of the Disneyland Park’s first mountain: the Matterhorn. The first roller coaster at Disneyland took laps around a Walt Disney Imagineers’ masterpiece depicting the Swiss Alps on June 14, 1959. It was the world’s first tubular steel roller coaster and part of the Disneyland Resort’s first major expansion since it opened in 1955.
Peaking at the Disneyland Resort’s Fantasyland, Disneyland’s Matterhorn Bobsleds feature an escape from the abominable snowman, with Walt Disney World’s Expedition Everest taking after it. Complete with mountain climbers and a sparkling snow cap, Disney Guests can’t miss the mountain.
As a Disneyland fixture, a trip to the Park feels incomplete without taking the bobsleds for a whirl, but Guests have had to live without it since April 17. After refurbishments for the past month and a half, Disney announced the iconic attraction is open as of June 2, 2023.
While Matterhorn fans can rejoice, other Disney Guests may want to mark their calendars for other Disneyland closures coming around the mountain.
Famous Disney Attractions Shutting Down
If you have a Disney trip booked in June, you might want to adjust your Park plans based on the Disneyland calendar. Starting June 5, the following classic Disneyland Park attractions are shutting down:
- Peter Pan’s Flight (Fantasyland): An original ride from 1955, this classic attraction is closing down for refurbishments but will reopen at the end of the month on June 29.
- Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride (Fantasyland): A fan-favorite and certified Disney classic from the year Disneyland opened, this ride will shut down on June 5 and reopen on June 15.
- Alice in Wonderland (Fantasyland): The whimsical world of Alice will shut its doors for refurbishments and reopen to Disney Guests on June 15.
Later this summer, another closure of a Disney cornerstone is coming, but this one isn’t necessarily a theme park ride.
The Disneyland Resort monorail will shut down for a Mouse-worthy makeover on July 5, 2023. After reports of dicey conditions and disrepair on the typically pristine monorail, Disney is doing its due diligence to restore it to tip-top shape.
There is no reopening date yet for the Disneyland monorail, but Disney Fanatic will share updates as they come.
