Magic Kingdom Park guests were greeted with construction walls as Big Thunder Mountain Railroad closed its gates on Monday, January 6, 2025. The Walt Disney World Resort roller coaster is now out of service “until further notice,” leaving fans wondering what’s next for this Frontierland favorite.
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Says Goodbye—For Now
First debuting in 1980, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad has been a cornerstone of Magic Kingdom Park’s Frontierland for 44 years. Known for its thrilling twists and turns and immersive Old West theming, the attraction has become a favorite for millions of Disney Parks fans. Its closure marks the beginning of a major refurbishment that will transform the ride for future guests.
The closure is part of a broader plan to update Magic Kingdom Park. In the coming years, Disney has announced plans to close Tom Sawyer Island and the Liberty Square Riverboat, filling in the Rivers of America to make way for two new attractions inspired by Pixar’s Cars (2006).
Big Changes Ahead
The updates to Frontierland won’t stop with Big Thunder Mountain Railroad’s refurbishment. Walt Disney Imagineers are hard at work on a brand-new Disney Villains land, confirmed during last year’s D23 Expo. The new area will bring the dark side of Disney to life with two attractions, themed dining, and retail spaces.
“Be prepared, you poor unfortunate souls,” Chairman of Disney Experiences Josh D’Amaro said at the event. “It’s going to be a fearless new vision for what a Disney experience can be.”
The addition of the Disney Villains land and Cars attractions signals one of the most significant transformations Magic Kingdom Park has seen in decades, promising a reimagined Frontierland for future generations.
What’s Next for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad?
Months before the closure, a crane was spotted in Frontierland, sparking speculation about a track replacement. While Disney has released few details about the refurbishment, a “general construction” permit suggests the work could last until at least March 2026, hinting at an extended closure of over 14 months.
Despite the uncertainty, Disney has promised “new magic” for the attraction, leaving fans eager to see what the future holds for the wildest ride in the wilderness.
