The Disney Channel during the 90s was a great and memorable time for many millennials. The channel was full of hit shows like Growing Pains, Ducktales, Goof Troop, Brotherly Love, and others. One of the most popular shows on the channel was Boy Meets World. Boy Meets World starred Ben Savage as Cory Matthews. The show revolved around Cory’s friends — played by Rider Strong and Danielle Fishel — and family, as he navigated life and love during middle school, high school, and, eventually, college.
Daniel Fishel, who played Topanga Lawrence, was not only Cory’s friend, but eventually became his love interest and, then, wife. However, Lawrence was not Disney’s first choice for the role. Actress Bonnie Morgan recently sat down with Fishel, of all people, and spoke on Fishel’s podcast, Pod Meets World. Fishel hosts the podcast with Rider Strong and Will Friedle, who played Cory’s brother Eric.
During the podcast, Morgan spoke about her short time on the show and why she thought that things didn’t work out. According to Morgan, Boy Meets World director David Trainer argued with her over how to say a line. She was then yelled at for laughing as Ben Savage went off-script and began to tease her. Morgan didn’t think that either of these things was a problem. She went home for the weekend, and her father received a phone call the next day, telling him she had been fired for not following directions.
However, Morgan said that she was fired for an entirely different reason.
“It came out very quickly to my agent that the director didn’t think I was pretty enough, literally did not think I was pretty enough. “So that meant that a grownup, a man, a boss, could lie about me and tell me I was untalented because the fact was he didn’t think I was pretty. I was shattered.”
Morgan said that she tried to be supportive of the rest of the cast and watched the first episode of Boy Meets World, where Fishel portrayed the role of Topanga. It was too much for the actress and she never watched another episode.
Sadly, Morgan was not the only 12-year-old who had to deal with grown men commenting on her looks. Fishel recently revealed that she encountered multiple adult men during her time on the show that would tell her they were counting down until she turned 18. Fishel said that she didn’t understand at the time, but now she sees how “creepy” and inappropriate it was.
