When the Oscar nominees for the 94th Academy Awards were announced, Disney fans learned that the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film was actually going to be a showdown between three Disney animated movies: Encanto, Raya and the Last Dragon, and the Disney and Pixar movie Luca. Each of these three Disney animated films has won several other awards during the 2022 award season, but the runaway success of Encanto has consistently dwarfed its competing nominees’ — and now our Oscar predictions were right! Encanto has just won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film!

Encanto had already won the Golden Globe Award, as well as many other awards this season, so it’s no surprise that the animated Disney movie has just had an iconic Academy Award win. Raya and the Last Dragon and Luca were both neck in neck with Encanto during awards season when it came to awards and nominations, but the viral songs from Encanto and the movie’s strong fanbase were already making the popular opinion of audiences clear: Encanto was the favorite. While the Academy can be obstinate about choosing films that are popular with mainstream audiences, this was not the case for once!
This Academy Award win is not the only way that Encanto and its cast are stealing the spotlight during the 94th Academy Awards. Several cast members from Encanto performed the hit original song “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” during the awards ceremony (with the help of Latin pop stars Becky G and Luis Fonsi during the live performance), and Encanto was also nominated for the Oscar for Best Original Song for “Dos Oruguitas”!

Lin-Manuel Miranda actually nominated “Dos Oruguitas” because he thought that it suited the overall themes from Encanto better than the song about Bruno did, but it was still a surprise for many fans since “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” has broken so many Billboard records.
Raya and the Last Dragon and Luca are both still fan favorites (and they’re still streaming on Disney+ if you haven’t seen them), but they couldn’t hold a candle to the success of Encanto! The other Oscar nominees were Flee and The Mitchells vs. the Machines.
