Buzz Lightyear’s Attraction Just Reopened at Disney and Lines Are Forming

The soft opening is over. The Disney technical rehearsals are done. The wait time was sitting at 35 minutes this morning and climbing.

Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin officially reopened at Magic Kingdom today following a multi-month refurbishment that Disney used to rebuild the attraction from the ground up. The quiet preview period that gave early guests access over the past week served its purpose and ended this morning when the full official experience went live under confirmed operating conditions. Lightning Lane is active. Wait times are tracking in My Disney Experience. Every Magic Kingdom guest today has access to what Imagineers have spent months building.

Spring Break crowds are already in the park. The 35-minute wait on the boards right now is the friendliest number guests will see all day. Could you go to Tomorrowland before that changes?

What Disney Actually Built

The version of Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin that opened today is a completely new attraction, not just a restored one. Disney rebuilt many key parts, making it different from the old version.

The most noticeable change is in the ride vehicles. The original vehicles are gone. They have been replaced with new, colorful vehicles inspired by Buzz Lightyear and Star Command. Each vehicle now has digital displays that show live scores and rankings during the ride. This real-time scoring adds a new competitive energy that the old end-of-ride scoreboard didn't provide.

The previous mounted blasters are no longer used. Instead, there are new handheld blasters that riders can take out of their holders for better aiming. These new blasters have always-on lasers, updated sound effects, new lights, and a vibration feature for feedback during gameplay. This allows for more movement, changing how the competition feels for returning guests.

The targets in the ride have also changed. They now react when hit, flashing green to show a successful shot. There are also white targets that light up and flash, offering higher points for those who learn the layout. This immediate feedback on hits improves the overall experience compared to the static targets in the old version.

A new opening scene introduces Buddy, a support robot created by Walt Disney Imagineering and Pixar Animation Studios, who helps train guests before the mission starts. The final battle scene now features Buzz Lightyear, and the new on-ride photo captures scores alongside the image for bragging rights. Plus, Disney included Easter eggs from Toy Story 5 throughout the ride, giving guests something to look for on repeat visits.

The gift shop has also received updates, including a new PhotoPass wall that reflects the revamped experience instead of the old version.

Why the Wait Time Is the Most Important Detail Right Now

On a Spring Break day at Magic Kingdom, the 35-minute wait by 9 a.m. highlights the park's urgency. With the park opening at 8 a.m. and high crowd levels, this wait time will only increase throughout the day. Guests who enjoyed the recent soft opening experienced lower crowds, but that advantage is now gone. Tomorrowland is buzzing again, and the lines are forming. Will you arrive before the wait times become the main focus?
