Disney movies are fun, family-friendly productions that are renowned for putting a smile on your face and spring in your step as you follow the journey of the character in question, often a Disney Princess, and her journey to self-discovery, love and a happily-ever-after.
Numerous Disney films have done just this in the past, giving us some classics that many Disney kids rewatch as adults, often even showing those same films to their children.
Disney Films Get a “Horrifying” Makeover
A trend that’s surfaced over the past few years has been the recreation of Disney movies through the lens of horror. Earlier this year, Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey was released. The film was a decided flop with both critics and audiences, with a 2.9/10 IMDb score and a 3% Rotten Tomatoes (it scored 50% on the audience rating) score.
The overall audience review summary on Rotten Tomatoes reads, “Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey has its moments, but they aren’t enough to make up for the weak plot, uneven acting, and general lack of real horror or humor.”
Cinderella Gets the Horror Treatment
Now, ITN Studios is giving another classic fairytale a horror remake, and it’s none other than the classic princess, Cinderella. The first few images of Cinderella’s Curse were released recently, and depict the beloved princess wielding the iconic glass slipper as a weapon.
ITN Studios was the distributor behind Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, and the creative minds behind this film also have previous horror/comedy films in their portfolios. The movie is produced and directed by Louisa Warren (The Leprechaun’s Curse, Tooth Fairy Queen of Pain) and is written by Harry Boxley (Mary Had A Little Lamb). It stars Kelly Rian Sanson as Cinderella, Chrissie Wunna as the Fairy Godmother, Natasha Tosini and Lauren Budd as the Evil Stepsisters, and Danielle Scott as Cinderella’s Stepmother.
Louisa Warren added about the film, “This an incredibly unique spin on the Cinderella we all love and know. There are going to be some truly horrific deaths by her hands. I think the gore hounds are in for a treat in my dark retelling.”
The movie will be released this year in time for Halloween, so horror fans can adequately prepare themselves for its arrival! In addition, the company is also working on Bambi: The Reckoning and Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare, along with a sequel to Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey.
