Just weeks after seemingly locking down its premier deluxe hotels with high-tech GPS geofencing and strict transit rules, the resort seems to be quietly relaxing—or at least inconsistently enforcing—these harsh limits. The confusion reached a fever pitch this week when real-world testing on the opening night of Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party revealed that non-resort guests were freely accessing walkways and mobile order systems that many believed were completely off-limits.

Social media quickly filled with exaggerated claims that non-resort guests might not be able to visit the monorail resorts at all, use their quick-service restaurants, or access the highly convenient walkway connecting Disney's Contemporary Resort to the Magic Kingdom.
Attractions Magazine Puts the Rules to the Test
To uncover the truth behind these restrictive rumors, Attractions Magazine conducted a recent field test on August 7, 2026. They perfectly timed the experiment to coincide with the opening night of Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party. This separately ticketed event provided an excellent opportunity to see exactly what access procedures guests might encounter during a chaotic, high-demand evening.
For the test, the Attractions Magazine team selected Disney's Contemporary Resort, noting that it generally experiences lower demand from non-hotel visitors than the neighboring Polynesian and Grand Floridian resorts. It also features the heavily debated Magic Kingdom pedestrian walkway. Deliberately waiting until after the massive Halloween party rush had subsided, the reporters parked at the Transportation and Ticket Center before making their way to the Contemporary as standard, non-hotel guests.
The results completely contradicted the internet's worst fears. Despite the June geofencing rollout, the non-hotel guests were able to access the mobile ordering area of the Contempo Café seamlessly. The Attractions Magazine team encountered no restricted-access messages when ordering their food. Most surprisingly, the testers were permitted to freely use the walkway connecting the Contemporary to Magic Kingdom without encountering a single resort-guest restriction.
Cars vs. Foot Traffic: Explaining the “Backtrack”
This successful test by Attractions Magazine has left many Disney fans confused. Has Disney completely backtracked on its June geotracking initiative? The reality appears to be a matter of technical clarification rather than a full rollback.
The GPS geotracking restrictions implemented in June were specifically designed to prevent guests from placing orders before arriving at the security parking gates to secure unauthorized parking. However, offsite guests can still dine at these elite locations if they arrive via Disney transport buses, monorails, or water taxis. Once the guest is physically inside the resort's geofenced boundary—having arrived via official transit channels—the My Disney Experience app verifies the guest's location and allows the mobile order to be processed.
As for the Contemporary walkway, it appears Disney has no intention of blocking foot traffic for guests who utilize official transportation to reach the hotel. Disney wants to restrict your car, not your physical presence.
What This Means for Your Next Trip
While guests can breathe a sigh of relief knowing they can still grab a quick bite and walk to Magic Kingdom, Attractions Magazine issued a major caveat: an early-August party night is not necessarily representative of what guests will encounter later in the season.
As the calendar pushes into Labor Day weekend, late September, and much of October, the Magic Kingdom resort area will experience significantly heavier demand. Resort access and transportation procedures can—and likely will—change dynamically as park crowds and hotel demand increase.
For families planning a Walt Disney World vacation this fall, the main takeaway is to stay flexible. Do not expect to use a mobile order as a free parking pass. However, if you want to soak in the ambiance of a deluxe resort or take a scenic stroll on the Contemporary walkway, you are absolutely allowed to do so—provided you leave your car at the Transportation and Ticket Center.
