The list is in! The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has finally released its “Long List” of nominees for its 2022 awards. Out of the 24 categories available, a Disney movie was found nominated for six.
The most outstanding of the nominated Disney films, in the eyes of the British, appears to be Disney’s Cruella. The retelling of the villainous dalmatian-hating fashionista, starring Emma Stone as the Cruella De Vil, has a chance to earn the BAFTAs for “Outstanding British Film,” “Costume Design,” “Make Up & Hair,” “Production Design,” and “Special Visual Effects.”
Also, Disney animated films are dominating the nominations for best “Animated Film.” Encanto, Luca, and Raya and the Last Dragon sit alongside their distant cousins under the Disney Umbrella Ron’s Gone Wrong and Sing 2. BAFTA distributed only seven nominations for animated feature films.
The long list of nominations, according to Variety, shows several other movies from Disney-owned studios also received BAFTA nominations. The most impressive of which appears to Wes Anderson’s latest movie, The French Dispatch. Released by Disney-owned Searchlight–formerly Fox Searchlight–the British Academy has nominated the film and some of its cast for ten different awards, including “Best Film.”

National Geographic’s documentary Becoming Cousteau earned the nomination for “Best Documentary.” You can enjoy the story of one of the greatest ocean explorers today on Disney+.
Perhaps the most surprising aspect of this year’s long list is the absence of Marvel’s film Spider-Man: Now Way Home. While praised by its fanbase, BAFTA rejected it due to the fact the film failed to meet “eligibility criteria.”
BAFTA’s “Long List” will be shortened as the second round of voting takes place between January 14 and January 27. The remaining nominees will be announced on February 3, then the vote for the winners will commence between February 9 and March 8. The 2022 BAFTA Awards will be held in Central London on March 13.
