Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge is quietly having the most heartwarming spring in recent Disney memory, and the guests who know about it are already making plans to get there before the rest of the world catches on.
Three red river hog piglets were just born backstage at the lodge. Earlier this year, an Ankole cattle calf arrived, making it the first of its kind born at Walt Disney World in over 20 years. Two separate baby animal arrivals at one of the most visually distinctive resort properties in all of Florida, happening within weeks of each other, during a spring season when the savanna is already doing everything it does best.
Most Walt Disney World guests have absolutely no idea any of this is happening. That is both a shame and an opportunity.
The New Disney Piglets
Three red river hog piglets were recently born backstage at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge and are currently spending time with their mother behind the scenes before making their public debut on the savanna. Red river hogs are native to West and Central Africa and are among the more visually striking animals at the lodge, known for their reddish coats, dramatic facial markings, and tufted ears that make them immediately recognizable to guests who spot them from the viewing areas.
The piglets are not yet visible to the public, but the plan is for them to join the rest of the red river hog group on the savanna once they are ready. Disney has welcomed red river hog piglets in previous years, and the newest arrivals continue a track record of successful animal care at the lodge that has made it one of the most respected hotel-based animal programs anywhere in the world.
When they debut they are going to be impossible to walk past without stopping.
The Calf That Made History
The piglets are joining a savanna that already has something remarkable on it. Earlier in March 2026 an Ankole cattle calf was born at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge marking the first Ankole cattle birth at Walt Disney World in over 20 years. The female calf and her mother are bonding behind the scenes before appearing on the savanna for guests.
Ankole cattle are defined by their massive curved horns that can span several feet and their deep cultural significance across East Africa including Uganda and Rwanda. They are among the more visually arresting animals on the savanna and the arrival of a new calf after a 20-year gap between births of this species at the resort is the kind of milestone that the animal care team at Animal Kingdom Lodge has been working toward for years.
The 20-year gap makes this birth genuinely significant beyond the obvious cuteness factor. It reflects the quality of the managed care environment at the lodge and the dedication of the teams responsible for maintaining conditions that support successful reproduction among species that require specific environmental and nutritional conditions to thrive.
How to Actually Get There
The animals at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge live at the resort property rather than at the Animal Kingdom theme park. Guests who want to see the savanna need to visit the lodge itself and there are straightforward ways to do that without being a registered resort guest.
A complimentary bus from Disney Springs provides free transportation to Animal Kingdom Lodge with no dining reservation or room booking required. Making a reservation at one of the lodge’s three restaurants is the other obvious route, and it rewards the effort considerably. Jiko offers African-inspired cuisine with an award-winning wine list.
Boma runs an extensive buffet consistently ranked among the best food at Walt Disney World. Sanaa serves African- and Indian-inspired dishes with direct savanna views from the dining room, so guests can watch wildlife while dining in a setting with no equivalent anywhere else in the resort.
Guests visiting in 2026 should be aware that refurbishment work is ongoing at both Kidani Village through May 2026 and Jambo House from May 2026 through January 2027. The animals continue their normal routines throughout construction, but guests who value the resort’s quiet atmosphere should factor in the possibility of daytime activity.
The piglets are coming. The calf is nearly ready for the savanna. Spring at Animal Kingdom Lodge is as good as it gets right now, and most guests have no idea.
