Walt Disney World Resort is gearing up for a massive transformation at Disney’s Animal Kingdom – but the good news is that we don’t have to say goodbye to one part of DinoLand U.S.A. just yet.
The End of DinoLand U.S.A.
The beloved yet controversial DinoLand U.S.A. will soon make way for an exciting new land inspired by the vibrant ecosystems and cultures of Tropical America.
Since its opening, DinoLand U.S.A. has sparked mixed reactions from guests. Designed as a quirky blend of prehistoric adventure and roadside Americana, the area’s fictional backstory revolved around paleontologists discovering fossils in Diggs County and establishing the Dino Institute. This narrative extended to DINOSAUR, the land’s anchor attraction, and Chester and Hester’s Dino-Rama, a carnival-themed section offering kitschy rides like Primeval Whirl and TriceraTop Spin.
Starting January 12, 2025, DinoLand U.S.A. will begin a phased closure. The transformation will mark the end of its roadside charm and open the door to an entirely new experience.
Despite the changes, the fan-favorite DINOSAUR ride will officially remain open for at least one more year.
Disney has confirmed that the attraction will operate throughout 2025, with its closure planned for 2026. Recent updates to the ride’s special effects ensure it’s in top form for its final year, giving fans ample opportunity to enjoy the thrilling time-travel expedition before it retires.
Introducing the Tropical Americas Land
The new Tropical Americas land will bring a fresh and immersive experience to Animal Kingdom, with two new major attractions leading the way.
- Indiana Jones: Replacing DINOSAUR, this reimagined attraction will transport guests to a Mayan temple for a brand-new storyline, distinct from the Indiana Jones Adventure ride at Disneyland.
- Encanto-Themed Ride: Disney’s first-ever Encanto attraction will invite guests into the magical Casita. Visitors will explore Antonio’s rainforest-inspired room, interact with animals, and encounter members of the beloved Madrigal family.
Originally set to begin construction in late 2024, the project has faced delays due to permit issues. Now, the new land is expected to debut in 2027.
A New Zootopia Experience on the Horizon
Ahead of Tropical Americas’ debut, Animal Kingdom will launch another highly anticipated attraction. In winter 2025, “Zootopia: Better Zoogether!” will open at the Tree of Life Theater, replacing the long-running “It’s Tough to Be a Bug!” The timing aligns with the release of Zootopia 2, ensuring fans of the franchise have a new reason to visit.
