Director Teases ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ as Darkest Film Yet

The Jurassic Park franchise has always flirted with horror, blending suspense with blockbuster thrills. While the first two entries—Jurassic Park (1993) and The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997)—remain pretty dark for PG-rated films, recent installments have taken a tamer approach. By the time Jurassic World Dominion hit theaters, the scares felt less intense than those in Netflix’s animated Camp Cretaceous and Chaos Theory.

Enter Jurassic World Rebirth. Helmed by Gareth Edwards, known for Monsters (2010) and Godzilla (2014), the film promises a return to the franchise’s roots. Edwards aims to channel the suspense and tension that made Steven Spielberg’s original a classic. In an interview with Empire Magazine, Edwards teased that Rebirth offers “an embarrassment of riches of different set-piece-type scenarios and tense, fun action moments.”

Edwards also describes the film as “action horror” and admits that he leans into the primal fear that dinosaurs inspire. “There’s something mythical about dinosaurs,” he shared. “The fact that they really did exist means you can’t dismiss them as a threat. When other films try to scare you, you can fob them off… But dinosaurs feel instantly relatable.” Edwards’ words hint at a more suspenseful approach, perhaps harkening back to nerve-wracking scenes like the Velociraptors hunting in the kitchen.

The plot revolves around Scarlett Johansson’s covert operations expert Zora Bennett, who’s tasked with securing genetical material from three massive dinosaurs on a mysterious island where a “sinister, shocking revelation” awaits. While the rating hasn’t been announced, it’s expected to follow the series’ PG-13 tradition. If Edwards sticks to Spielberg’s philosophy of implied horror, fans may once again find themselves terrified of dinosaurs.
