Once again, the years-old criticism of Disney favoring a “woke political and social agenda” over profits, and misleading shareholders about this reality has resurfaced.
A criticism that has made itself particularly well-known since former Disney CEO Bob Chapek was at the helm of the Walt Disney Company is the increasing ostensible “wokeness” of the company. Ever since Disney began its battle with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and spoke out against the “Don’t Say Gay” bill, many have felt Disney has lost its way.
As reported by Fox News, America First Legal (AFL), a group aligned with former President of the United States, Donald Trump, wrote Disney and accused the Mouse House of engaging in “unlawful discrimination.”
AFL alleges that Disney has pushed political causes that have caused “damage to Disney’s brand, properties, and commercial reputation by management’s manufactured misalignment between its woke political and social agenda and the vast majority of the Company’s customers.”
Former Trump adviser Stephen Miller, who heads the group, states that the company’s leadership has “intentionally manufactured misalignment between the Company and its core customers.”
These allegations, concerning Disney’s woke agenda and its impact on shareholders, are not novel within the company’s history. Time and again, Disney has encountered these kinds of accusations, across a multitude of situations and instances in the recent past
The intense scrutiny surrounding Disney’s approach to its woke agenda and how it intersects with the interests of shareholders has been a recurring theme, underscoring the ongoing significance of this issue within the company’s operations.
Whether it was for casting Black actress Halle Bailey as Princess Ariel in The Little Mermaid or the gorgeous Yara Shahidi as Tinker Bell in Peter Pan and Wendy, many have claimed that Disney’s recent decisions be those business-based or casting-based have been in favor of a “woke agenda.”
Add to this the company’s choice to shut down Splash Mountain at Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort and replace it with Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. Fans were unhappy, and to this day, #SaveSplashMountain is a hashtag and a cry that rings out among devoted Song of the South fans.
Of course, it is because of many of these decisions that activist investor Nelson Peltz is so set on making sure that the Disney board sees him and former Disney CFO Jay Rasulo as board members, however, whether this will actually come to pass still remains to be seen.
Still, one can’t help but wonder what the future of Disney holds considering the choppy waters the mega corp is navigating at present.
