Disney has been receiving a lot of flack recently for its movies. Many fans have been taking issue with the Walt Disney Company because they feel that the Mouse House has “ruined movies” in catering to “woke audiences.” Disney on their part has mentioned consistently that their effort is primarily to increase diversity and representation in their content, however many Disney fans have disagreed with the way in which the Walt Disney Company has gone about doing that.
American Born Chinese is a graphic novel written and illustrated by Gene Luen Yang. Published in 2006, it became a critical and commercial success, winning several awards, including the Michael L. Printz Award, the Eisner Award, and the National Book Award.
In 2021, Disney announced they would be making a Disney Plus (stylized Disney+) series based on the book. The Disney production features a star studded cast including recent Academy Award winners Michelle Yeoh, Stephanie Hsu, and Ke Huy Quan, comedian Ronny Chieng, Yeo Yann Yann, Ben Wang, Daniel Wu, Chin Han, Sydney Taylor and more among a star-studded cast. It’s directed by Lucy Liu and Destin Daniel Cretton.
But fans were concerned that Disney, in “sanitizing” the series would ruin it.
