As awards season continues in the wake of the Golden Globes, the usual patterns in the awards ceremonies are already beginning to emerge — but with some surprises along the way. Two Marvel stars have already been front and center: Doctor Strange actor Benedict Cumberbatch has received praise and nominations for his lead role in the Western film called The Power of the Dog, while the actor Andrew Garfield from Spider-Man has gained favor with his new movie tick, tick…boom!. Now that the SAG Award nominations have been announced, some other Disney stars and some Marvel productions are getting award circuit attention, too!

Maleficent Disney princess Elle Fanning has been nominated for the SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series for her leading role as Catherine the Great opposite Nicholas Hoult in the Hulu series The Great, while Cinderella actress Cate Blanchett has been nominated for the SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role for her work in Nightmare Alley.

In the SAG Award ensemble categories, Marvel started to receive nominations for accolades. The Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Loki were both nominated for Screen Actors’ Guild Awards for Outstanding Action Performance By a Stunt Ensemble in a Television Series!

Marvel movies also did as well as Marvel Disney+ shows, with Black Widow and Shang-Chi: Legend of the Ten Rings both being nominated for Outstanding Action Performance By a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture. Shang-Chi has also already been nominated for an Annie Award, alongside Raya and the Last Dragon, Luca, and Encanto, which were all nominated for multiple awardsSpider-Man: No Way Home, surprisingly, was snubbed by the Screen Actors Guild and received no nominations despite its positive reviews from audiences.

The nominations this year were presented on Instagram instead of television, and they were presented by actress Rosario Dawson and actress Vanessa Hudgens. Unfortunately, a Screen Actors Guild Awards nomination announcement on Instagram was limiting for any Disney fans or Marvel fans who preferred to avoid social media and who didn’t have Instagram accounts!

As usual, there are already some consistent contenders in the award season for 2022. Olivia Colman, Lady Gaga, Mahershala Ali, Sandra Oh, Bradley Cooper, Ben Affleck, Nicole Kidman, Javier Bardem, Elisabeth Moss, and Kirsten Dunst are all nominees for the Screen Actors Guild Awards, and some of them were also nominated at the Golden Globes, so we’ll most likely be seeing a lot more of those male actors and female actors throughout the 2022 awards season!

Keep an eye out for Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon this awards season, as well; each actress has received positive reviews for her leading role in The Morning Show on Apple TV+. Will Smith has also just won the Golden Globe for his role in King Richard.

Fortunately, the SAG Awards themselves should be airing on TBS and TNT on February 27 at 8 pm Eastern Standard Time. Will you be watching the Screen Actors’ Guild Awards on Sunday, February 27 when they air? How many of these SAG Award-nominated movies or series have you watched?
