Even though anticipation has been high for the Avatar sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, fans of Pandora and the world of the Na’vi warriors were understandably uncertain about whether or not the movie would ever actually reach theaters.
The movie took over a decade to follow its predecessor, Avatar, which was a tremendous success — and even though it has been made clear by director James Cameron (and actresses Sigourney Weaver and Zoe Saldana) that work is already being done on the next three Avatar movies, Disney still didn’t seem to be one hundred percent certain about the series’ future.
But fear not, Avatar fans! It looks like Disney is gambling on a big payoff from Avatar: The Way of Water, and making plans to schedule the next three movies’ release dates even before the Avatar sequel has reached audiences. James Cameron had initially said that the remaining films might not actually come to fruition if Avatar: The Way of Water did not achieve mass box office success after its December 2022 premiere.
Now that an updated schedule of Disney and Marvel movie release dates has been revealed, it is clear that Disney is indeed making plans with the assumption that the Avatar sequel is going to be a big enough hit to warrant the three movies that are already in progress!
We can see in the Tweet shown below from journalist Scott Gustin that there have been several postponements, particular in the Marvel department, but that the next three Avatar movies are scheduled for the following dates: December 20, 2024 (which will be Avatar 3), December 18, 2026 (Avatar 4), and December 22, 2028 (Avatar 5).
Disney and Marvel released a new film schedule with big changes:
Blade moves from 11/3/23 to 9/6/24
Deadpool moves from 9/6/24 to 11/8/24
Fantasic Four moves from 11/8/24 to 2/14/25
Avengers: Secret Wars moves from 11/7/25 to 5/1/26

Some audience members might feel frustrated by the one-year gap that is shown on the schedule between each movie premiere, but considering the fact that James Cameron was recently sharing doubts about whether or not the entire series would ever even be released, this is good news!
Are you excited about the new Avatar movie, and were you aware that the next films’ futures depended on this first sequel’s success in December?
