Fans of Kate Winslet, her iconic 1997 film Titanic, and the first Avatar movie will all be pleased to learn more about the mysterious character that the English actress plays in the upcoming Avatar sequel Avatar: The Way of Water. Until now, we only really knew that the Academy Award-winner was filming so many scenes underwater in the James Cameron film that she has actually broken Top Gun actor Tom Cruise’s record for holding one’s breath underwater — but now, images of Kate Winslet’s character have finally been revealed!
As it turns out, we have already seen Kate Winslet’s character Ronal (whose name is apparently “pronounced ‘Ro-nail’”) from Avatar: The Way of Water in the movie’s trailer: we just didn’t know it yet. Ronal is the pregnant Na’vi leader shown briefly in the trailer. According to Empire magazine, “along with Cliff Curtis’ Tonowari, Kate Winslet’s Ronal leads the Metkayina tribe, who dwell in the shallows of Pandora’s vast oceans – and will play a major part in in the upcoming adventure.” You can see two new images of Ronal being played by the winner of the 2008 Academy Award for Best Actress below!
Kate Winslet confirmed that, just as the trailer would suggest, Ronal “is deeply loyal and a fearless leader.” “She is strong. A warrior,” Winslet added. “Even in the face of grave danger, and with an unborn baby on board, she still joins her people and fights for what she holds most dear: her family and their home.”
Even though Ronal sounds a lot like Neytiri (who is played by Zoe Saldana), Empire says that “when Sam Worthington’s Jake and Zoe Saldaña’s Neytiri are displaced from their home and flee to the Metkayina’s waterworld, [audiences can] expect friction [because] the drama and conflict that tends to follow the Sully clan around means they won’t necessarily be welcomed with open arms”.
Kate Winslet was reunited with Titanic director James Cameron for this movie, which was apparently an interesting reunion. “Jim and I are both totally different people now to who we were 26 years ago,” the renowned actress joked. “He is calmer, and I am definitely more hyperactive now!”
Kate Winslet also confirmed her record-breaking freediving skills. “Seven minutes and 14 seconds, baby!” the mother of three said enthusiastically when asked about filming underwater with just one breath for the Avatar sequel. Winslet apparently relished the challenge. “The most amazing thing for me as a middle-aged woman was to learn something not just new, but superhuman,” she explained.
