During the presentation at the D23 Expo, 20th Century Studios dropped a significant surprise. The clips were in 3D and were shown to attendees on two screens in the main Anaheim Convention Center room. Audiences also got the chance to see a new trailer. Per journalist Ashley Carter, the director, James Cameron, joined in from New Zealand via video chat, and the cast came to D23 Expo live.

Cameron reportedly told the crowd that he was finishing the film and working in the middle of a “pretty hectic” five-year production cycle on the series’ second, third, and fourth installments.

He said, “It’s going great, and the stuff coming in from Weta is looking spectacular,” Cameron told the crowd. “I’m super excited to be finally finishing up movie 2. I know everyone’s been waiting a long time. Hopefully, we’ll show something today, and you can decide if it’s been worth it.”

Carter also shared some photos of the 3D glasses that were handed out to the audience, adding:

The audience at #D23Expo2022 got an exclusive sneak peek at Avatar The Way of Water. 3D glasses were handed out and we were shown a few clips from the film. The footage, especially the underwater scenes, was gorgeous.

From a further update, we also know that the scenes were from different parts of the film.

One scene showed the Na’vi swimming underwater. Another is a youngster saying he wants to be different than his father. Additionally, there were scenes of some kind of hostage situation, with combat in the woods at night. Another moment showed an emotional conversation between Sam Worthington’s and Zoe Saldana’s characters. A tribal leader all told a younger Na’vi that war is bad.
