Disney’s approach to storytelling inside its theme parks blends timeless attractions with evolving updates. At Walt Disney World, that balance is on full display as the resort prepares for new lands, overlays, and potential tie-ins to upcoming films.
Overlays Bring New Stories to Guests
Two of Walt Disney World’s headlining attractions are now receiving overlays tied directly to film releases. These changes highlight a pattern of updating existing rides to mark new chapters in beloved franchises.
At Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run will introduce characters from The Mandalorian franchise. Already an interactive adventure that places six riders into the cockpit as pilots, gunners, or engineers, the ride will soon allow guests to choose their own adventure.
Disney Parks Blog detailed the upcoming story: “In this new thrilling storyline, Hondo Ohnaka has gotten wind of a deal going down on Tatooine between ex-Imperial officers and a band of pirates. There’s a generous bounty for their capture, so you’ll borrow the iconic ship and team up with Mando and Grogu to track them down and explore the galaxy.”
The overlay debuts on May 22, 2026, coinciding with the release of The Mandalorian and Grogu.
Meanwhile, Magic Kingdom’s TRON Lightcycle / Run has introduced a new look tied to TRON: Ares (2025), starring Jared Leto. The updated overlay began on September 15, 2025, with Shanghai Disneyland following a day later.
Disney Parks Blog described the transformation: “Replacing the blue and orange hues of the ride, you’ll weave through twisting tunnels of vibrant red and orange light trails, feeling the rush of wind and the surge of acceleration as you compete in a dazzling Lightcycle race. The striking red hues in Tron: Ares within the digital realm contrast sharply with the classic blue tones of the Grid. Adding to the immersive visuals, the pulsating industrial sounds of Nine Inch Nails will drive the ride’s energy, pushing your experience between the Grid and reality into a fully immersive, futuristic symphony of light, speed, and sound.”
The Bigger Picture
Looking beyond overlays, Walt Disney World is set to grow substantially over the next decade. Animal Kingdom will welcome Tropical Americas, Magic Kingdom will add Piston Peak National Park and Villains Land, and Hollywood Studios will debut Monstropolis. A Muppets retheme of Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster is also planned, showing how both large and small projects shape the guest experience.
This strategy has helped Walt Disney World remain the most visited theme park destination worldwide, even with ongoing debates around cost and accessibility. By continually refreshing attractions while investing in large-scale additions, Disney creates reasons for fans to return year after year.

What Could Come Next
There’s speculation that Disney may look toward Pandora — The World of Avatar for another refresh. While Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) passed without an attraction update, the release of Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025) could inspire changes to Flight of Passage.
From intergalactic missions with Mando and Grogu to racing through the digital Grid in red and orange light trails, Walt Disney World continues to link the magic of cinema with its attractions. Guests can expect both new lands and overlays to carry that vision forward in the years ahead.
