This year, the Walt Disney Company has once again earned the ire of its fans and community with its Thanksgiving image.

The Walt Disney Company has not had the easiest year. It’s been fraught with difficulty and controversy for the Mouse House. For one, 2023 saw Disney CEO Bob Iger working around the clock to ensure that the company would successfully navigate the mess left in the wake of former Disney CEO Bob Chapek’s exit.

From the controversy surrounding Disney’s alleged wokeness to its battle with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, much affected Disney in 2023. Now, it appears Disney is caught in a new web of chaos relating to the holiday season.

Disney Faces Immense Criticism for Its Thanksgiving Painting

Right in time for Thanksgiving, Disney released a new Thanksgiving painting. But the new version was met with a lot of criticism for seemingly being created by the technology that has taken the world by storm: artificial intelligence.

Disney has a tradition of animating the Thanksgiving staple, Norman Rockwell’s “Freedom From Want,” and fans have greatly appreciated the painting in the past. However, this year, seeing as the new version is allegedly made with AI, fans have become quite disillusioned with Disney.

Disney took to Central Florida Disney Resort, Disney World’s, official Instagram handle, to share the photo, and guests did not hold back from expressing their disappointment.

One fan commented, “Dear Disney AI division, nobody wants this.”

Another agreed, “Not gonna lie this is creepy. Why would @disney choose to AI generate this image instead of paying one of their talented and well deserving artists?”

Many commenters noted that Disney was an incredibly large entertainment company and yet was relying on AI to make a painting that they should have paid their artists for.

One shared, “A company built on the backs of artists and the company turns to AI. Disappointing.”

Another commented ironically, “Yesss love the blatant use of ai despite being a billion dollar corporation that should be paying their employees 😻😻😻.”

On X, formerly known as Twitter, one fan took the time to put the original Norman Rockwell next to Disney’s 2023 version, demonstrating just how creepy the Disney version is.

Of course, it’s not a fun time to be Disney at the moment, considering its latest release that it was banking on to be a hit is looking to crash at the box office.

Wish, the company’s musical about the Wishing Star, came out in theaters on Thanksgiving Day. As Sportskeeda reported, “This new animated flick with Chris Pine didn’t do well at the box office, only raking in a measly $8.3 million. Considering that it cost a cool $200 million to make, the movie is expected to take a major hit.”

Disney has not officially responded to the allegations of the AI painting at the time of publishing this article. It will certainly be worth observing, however, if Disney continues to replace its artists with technology.
