Disney’s Legendary Jungle Cruise Set to Close as Park Transformation Rumors Mount

Another Disney classic is facing a lengthy shutdown.

Jungle Cruise has been a staple of Disney theme parks since the original Disneyland opened in 1955. Inspired by Disney's True-Life Adventures nature documentaries, the attraction takes guests through jungle scenery filled with animatronic animals, accompanied by a skipper delivering jokes throughout the journey.

The attraction eventually expanded to Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom in 1971, Tokyo Disneyland in 1983, and Hong Kong Disneyland in 2005.

Disney has continued updating Jungle Cruise over the years. In 2021, Disneyland and Magic Kingdom received new scenes and storylines, removing several controversial depictions while retaining the attraction's familiar format.

Now, another version is preparing for an extended closure at a park already undergoing significant changes.

Disney's Jungle Cruise Closing for Nearly Three Months

Tokyo Disney Resort has confirmed that Jungle Cruise: Wildlife Expeditions will close on January 6, 2027.

The Adventureland attraction will remain unavailable through March 31, 2027, meaning guests visiting Tokyo Disneyland during the first three months of the year will miss out on the experience.

Disney has not explained what work will take place during the refurbishment. However, the closure is currently classified as temporary, with the attraction expected to return in April.

Tokyo Disneyland's Jungle Cruise previously underwent a much longer refurbishment in 2014.

The attraction closed that January before reopening on September 8 as Jungle Cruise: Wildlife Expeditions. The approximately 1.6 billion yen project introduced new lighting, special effects, and an original musical soundtrack.

It also introduced a nighttime experience, offering guests a different journey through the jungle after dark.

Today, the attraction takes guests on a 10-minute expedition past elephants, crocodiles, lions, and a mysterious temple. Each boat carries up to 32 passengers.

Several other Tokyo Disneyland attractions are also scheduled for refurbishment in early 2027.

Peter Pan's Flight will close from January 6 through February 2, while Splash Mountain will shut down between January 7 and February 4.

Haunted Mansion will also close from January 8 through February 4, returning to its regular presentation following the seasonal Haunted Mansion Holiday Nightmare overlay.

However, Jungle Cruise's extended closure comes amid ongoing speculation that Disney could eventually replace the attraction as part of a much larger redevelopment.

Major Disney Park Changes Raise Questions About Jungle Cruise

Tokyo Disneyland has several major projects underway, including a complete replacement of its original Space Mountain.

The new roller coaster, accompanied by a redesigned surrounding area, is expected to open in 2027. A separate Wreck-It Ralph attraction will also replace Buzz Lightyear's Astro Blasters in Tomorrowland next spring.

However, the park's long-term development plans could extend well beyond Tomorrowland.

In April 2025, Tokyo Disney Resort operator Oriental Land Company released its 2035 Long-Term Management Strategy, accompanied by concept artwork depicting possible changes to existing park areas.

One image showed a dramatically redesigned Adventureland, apparently without Jungle Cruise, Western River Railroad, Swiss Family Treehouse, or the Enchanted Tiki Room.

Instead, the artwork suggested attractions inspired by Up (2009), The Incredibles (2004), and Moana (2016).

An Up-themed development resembling Paradise Falls appeared to occupy part of the existing Jungle Cruise area, while an Incredibles roller coaster and Moana-inspired attraction were depicted elsewhere.

These were preliminary concepts, and Oriental Land Company has not confirmed plans to remove or replace any of the attractions.

However, another Tokyo Disney Resort closure has since attracted attention.

In April 2026, Disney announced that Aquatopia would permanently close at Tokyo DisneySea. The attraction, which had operated since the park's 2001 opening, welcomed its final guests on September 14.

Aquatopia was notably absent from the company's 2025 concept artwork, which depicted a redesigned Port Discovery area.

Following the announcement, Oriental Land Company confirmed that the site was being considered for future development, although no replacement project had been finalized.

Meanwhile, other attractions potentially affected by the Adventureland proposals have experienced their own closures.

Swiss Family Treehouse has remained closed since April 2022, with no reopening date announced. The Enchanted Tiki Room also underwent a temporary refurbishment between September 24 and October 23, 2026.

Jungle Cruise itself hosted a special summer experience from July 2 through September 14, 2026, featuring modified expeditions and commemorative stickers. Some fans interpreted the promotion as a possible farewell, although Disney never identified it as such.

Despite the speculation, there is currently no confirmation that Jungle Cruise will be permanently removed.

Its upcoming three-month refurbishment remains separate from Oriental Land Company's possible redevelopment plans, and Tokyo Disney Resort continues to list the attraction as reopening in spring 2027.
