SeaWorld Park Replacement Announced, New Destination Opening Within Days

A long-shuttered property once occupied by SeaWorld is finally getting a second chance.

SeaWorld has operated marine life parks in the United States for more than 60 years, beginning with its original San Diego location in 1964. Its current portfolio includes parks in Orlando, San Diego, and San Antonio, as well as Busch Gardens and several water parks.

However, the company's history also includes locations that have disappeared entirely. While some SeaWorld parks have continued expanding with new roller coasters and attractions, others have been sold, demolished, or incorporated into different entertainment destinations.

One former SeaWorld property has remained largely inaccessible to the public for years, despite once being among the Midwest's most popular family attractions. After several ownership changes and multiple closures, much of the site was left abandoned.

Now, local officials have confirmed that visitors will soon be allowed back onto part of the property, following a redevelopment project that has been underway for more than a year.

New Park Taking Over Former SeaWorld Property Opens October 25

Aurora Park at Geauga Lake will officially open on October 25, 2026, bringing a new public recreation destination to the site of the former SeaWorld Ohio in Aurora.

The city will celebrate the opening from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at 1100 Squires Road, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony scheduled for 1:30 p.m.

Unlike its predecessor, the new park will not feature killer whales, dolphin performances, or roller coasters. Instead, visitors will find public green spaces, restored buildings, and access to the waterfront.

The opening marks the completion of the first section of a much larger project to transform the former amusement park into a community recreation area.

Among the new facilities are a welcome plaza, landscaped lawns, and a renovated Sunset Pier overlooking Geauga Lake. The former SeaWorld ticket and gatehouse pavilions have also been restored as part of the development.

Officials have planned family-friendly activities for opening day, with food and beverages available for purchase.

“What a great day this will be for Aurora and Northeast Ohio,” Mayor Ann Womer Benjamin said in the city's October 12 announcement.

“Following years of decline and abandonment, this beautiful property will again be open for public enjoyment, thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make this happen!”

The city acquired Geauga Lake and 48 surrounding acres for approximately $5.3 million in December 2024. A formal groundbreaking ceremony followed in October 2025, with construction continuing throughout 2026.

The project has also experienced delays. Earlier plans called for the first section to open during the summer, before the expected opening shifted to October.

For now, only part of the planned destination will be accessible. Additional facilities are expected to follow as construction continues.

These include an accessible adventure playground, along with proposed kayak and stand-up paddleboard rentals that would allow guests to enjoy the lake itself.

Future phases could also introduce a public beach, outdoor swimming pool, sports courts, and an amphitheater. City officials have previously discussed adding rock-climbing facilities and walking trails.

The beach is among the next major priorities, with Womer Benjamin previously expressing hopes that it could be completed within the next two years.

The Rise and Fall of SeaWorld's Former Midwest Destination

Long before the latest redevelopment, Geauga Lake was already an established amusement destination.

The original Geauga Lake park dates back to the 19th century, initially offering lakeside recreation before gradually expanding its collection of attractions. A carousel arrived in 1889, while the historic Big Dipper roller coaster opened in 1925.

SeaWorld joined the area decades later, opening its Ohio location on the opposite side of Geauga Lake in 1970.

The park became SeaWorld's second location, bringing killer whale performances, dolphin shows, and other marine animal exhibits to the Midwest.

However, its seasonal operating schedule posed challenges that SeaWorld's warmer-weather destinations did not face.

In 2001, the company sold SeaWorld Ohio to Six Flags, which merged it with neighboring Geauga Lake to create Six Flags Worlds of Adventure.

The combined destination covered approximately 700 acres and was promoted as the world's largest theme park by area at the time.

Its existence was relatively short-lived. Cedar Fair acquired the property in 2004, subsequently closing the former SeaWorld section and removing its marine animal attractions.

Geauga Lake continued operating as an amusement park until 2007, when Cedar Fair permanently shut down its rides.

The adjacent Wildwater Kingdom water park survived for another nine years before closing in September 2016, ending the property's long history as a major ticketed amusement destination.

Since then, redevelopment plans have gradually taken shape across the wider area. Some former amusement park land has been designated for residential and commercial development, while Aurora has focused on restoring public access to the lakefront.

Not everything from SeaWorld's original property will survive. The former aquarium building was deemed unsuitable for preservation, with demolition approved in 2026.

However, the restored entrance structures will provide a reminder of the property's past when Aurora Park at Geauga Lake welcomes its first visitors on October 25.

The upcoming opening will not bring back SeaWorld Ohio or Geauga Lake's former rides, but it will return part of the waterfront to public use after years of closures.
