From Screen to Stage : How Disney’s Stage Connect Is Revolutionizing School Theater

Disney has long been a champion of arts education, and their latest initiative takes this commitment to a whole new level. Enter Stage Connect, a groundbreaking online program that expands the reach of the beloved Disney Musicals in Schools initiative. For the 2025–2026 school year, up to 200 public elementary schools across the United States will have the chance to join the magic, no matter where they are.

A History of Making Theater Accessible

For over 16 years, Disney Musicals in Schools has brought the transformative power of theater to underserved schools in 22 U.S. and U.K. cities. The program has already reached more than 100,000 students, giving them the opportunity to stage Disney KIDS musicals like Frozen and 101 Dalmatians. Schools traditionally benefited from in-person support, including guidance from professional Teaching Artists. Now, Stage Connect takes the program virtual, making it accessible to even more communities.

What Does Stage Connect Offer?

With Stage Connect, participating schools receive everything they need to stage a Disney KIDS musical. This includes:

  • Online Training Courses: Hosted by Broadway stars L. Steven Taylor (The Lion King’s Mufasa) and Bonita Hamilton (The Lion King’s Shenzi).
  • Comprehensive ShowKits: Packed with scripts, choreography videos, rehearsal tracks, and director’s guides.
  • Webinars and Support: Schools gain access to live and on-demand sessions to ensure success.
  • Free Performance Rights: Schools can choose from eight Disney KIDS musicals, including Aladdin, The Aristocats, Finding Nemo, The Jungle Book, and Winnie the Pooh.

Schools need only commit a team of educators and a few extra rehearsal hours to bring the production to life.

A Mission Beyond the Stage

Disney’s commitment to equity is at the heart of Stage Connect. The program prioritizes schools in underserved and rural areas, ensuring that theater’s transformative benefitsβ€”confidence, teamwork, creativityβ€”reach students who might not otherwise have access to such opportunities.

The program also fosters sustainability. After completing their first year, schools gain continued access to new musicals in Year 2 and discounted resources in Year 3, helping them establish lasting theater programs.

  • Orlando: Students performed Disney KIDS musicals at the Dr. Phillips Center, supported by Walt Disney World’s contributions.
  • New York City: Schools showcased their productions at the historic New Amsterdam Theatre, with Broadway professionals hosting the event.

With Stage Connect, Disney aims to replicate these magical experiences in schools across the country.
