Disney Resort Cracks Down on Portable Chargers With Sudden Safety Warning

Portable chargers have become nearly as essential to a Disney visit as comfortable shoes. Most guests now rely on mobile apps to manage dining reservations, virtual queues, and wait times. Phones drain quickly, and power banks have become a daily necessity. Yet the rise in portable charging also brings new expectations around safety.

Recent years have seen increasing scrutiny of lithium-ion batteries used in everyday power banks. Regulators and safety agencies worldwide have highlighted incidents of overheating, swelling, or combustion when chargers are stored improperly.

These cases remain rare, but the potential severity has prompted new guidelines across industries, including travel and hospitality.

Several airlines, particularly in Asia, now prohibit the use of loose lithium-ion batteries during flights. Emirates, Vietnam Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Scoot, EVA Air, Thai Airways, and AirAsia have all implemented restrictions. Most travelers already know these batteries cannot be checked with luggage, but in-flight usage bans reflect growing attention to the fire risk.

Now, one major Disney destination is taking similar precautions onsite.

Tokyo Disney Resort Issues Advisory

Tokyo Disney Resort released a guest notice after Japan’s Consumer Affairs Agency and Fire and Disaster Management Agency issued new warnings about lithium-ion products, including portable power banks. The resort’s advisory reinforces its responsibility to maintain a safe environment for millions of annual visitors.

“To ensure the safety and security of all our guests, we ask that you take the following precautions when using mobile batteries and other devices,” the notice states.

Guests are advised not to use or store chargers in high-temperature areas or near flammable materials. The advisory specifically lists windows exposed to direct sunlight, bedding, curtains, and enclosed areas such as bags where heat may build up.

The resort also emphasizes supervision while charging. Guests should not leave portable batteries charging while asleep or away from their rooms. Chargers must remain visible and monitored. This is a key point intended to prevent unattended overheating.

Disney Hotel Staff May Intervene

Cast members at Tokyo Disney Resort hotels — including Tokyo Disneyland Hotel, Tokyo DisneySea Fantasy Springs Hotel, and Tokyo Disney Resort Toy Story Hotel — may step in if unsafe charging practices are observed. Housekeeping staff can move or unplug devices if they appear at risk. The notice asks guests to understand this as part of standard fire prevention protocol.

Despite the caution, portable chargers are still widely supported across the resort. Tokyo Disney Resort offers rental power banks inside both parks for a small fee. These units can be returned to multiple kiosks, reducing the need to bring personal chargers back to hotel rooms.

Other Disney destinations have similar systems. Disneyland Paris provides portable charger rental kiosks. Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort in the U.S. rely on the FuelRod swap program, allowing quick charger exchanges throughout the parks.

These systems ultimately help Disney maintain safer control over how portable batteries are used onsite.
