In the ever-shifting world of theme park storytelling, few franchises have left as deep a mark on Disney parks as Star Wars. For nearly four decades, the galaxy far, far away has shaped attractions, inspired themed lands, and drawn legions of fans to Tomorrowland and beyond. Yet not every corner of the world has chosen to double down.
Hong Kong Disneyland, which recently celebrated a return to profitability, is in the midst of a major transformation. With expansion projects underway and a high-profile anniversary event in full swing, the park is turning its focus toward new intellectual properties—sometimes at the expense of others. Among the quietest but most noticeable changes is the subtle rollback of Star Wars theming in Tomorrowland.
A Symbol Departs Hong Kong Disneyland
The most visible change is the removal of the T-65B X-wing Starfighter, which had been parked near Hyperspace Mountain at the Tomorrowland Starport. Once a popular photo spot, the full-scale prop was quietly dismantled last month, marking a rare subtraction from the park’s Star Wars offerings.
The removal was first hinted at in a post by Hong Kong Disneyland Ambassadors, who posed in front of the ship and teased that it would “soon depart for a new mission.” No further context was given, though fans speculated it could signal an end to the Hyperspace Mountain overlay itself.
To date, Disney has offered no official explanation. However, the area has seen practical updates in recent weeks, including expanded lanes for Disney Premier Access (the local version of Lightning Lane) and a shaded rest zone. The backdrop of the Rebel Hangar, once a complement to the X-wing’s presence, has also disappeared.
Rumors have circulated in the past that the Paris version of Hyperspace Mountain—widely regarded as the roughest of the iterations—might also shed its Star Wars theme, but no changes have been confirmed.
A New Direction for the Park
Despite pulling back on Star Wars, the park’s Tomorrowland is far from quiet. Disney has already announced a new Marvel-themed expansion anchored by a high-tech Spider‑Man attraction. It will be the latest addition to the resort’s Stark Expo area, which already houses the Iron Man Experience and Ant‑Man and the Wasp: Nano Battle!
Beyond Marvel, a first-of-its-kind Pixar Entertainment Experience is under development between Toy Story Land and World of Frozen. Though details remain under wraps, Disney has promised immersive entertainment featuring beloved Pixar characters.
Before this comes the commencement of the park’s 20th anniversary with a year-long celebration titled “The Most Magical Party of All.” Kicking off in June, the festivities include a castle-stage show, a massive “Friendtastic!” parade, upgraded nighttime fireworks, limited-edition merchandise, and themed food and beverages.
