Alien Swirling Saucers has always been one of the more lighthearted attractions inside Disney's Hollywood Studios. The spinning family ride isn't known for huge thrills, but it has become a popular stop for guests exploring Toy Story Land.
Now Disney has made a noticeable change before the ride even begins.
Guests can no longer pick which rocket they'll ride.
Instead, Cast Members now assign every party to a specific numbered vehicle as part of a new loading procedure designed to keep the attraction moving more efficiently.
While it won't change the ride experience itself, it does remove one of the few choices guests previously had during boarding.
No More Choosing Your Favorite Rocket
When Alien Swirling Saucers opened in 2018, boarding was pretty straightforward.
Guests entered the platform and walked toward whichever rocket they wanted. Some preferred certain colors, while others simply headed to the nearest available vehicle.
That freedom is now gone.
Before entering the platform, guests receive an assigned number. Once the gates open, they head directly to the matching rocket rather than choosing for themselves.
Disney has also added numbered waiting areas and matching vehicle numbers to make the process easier to follow.
It's a much more structured system than longtime visitors may remember.
Why Disney Changed It
The biggest benefit is organization.
Instead of dozens of guests entering the platform at once and deciding where to go, everyone already knows exactly which rocket they're boarding.
That allows Cast Members to keep guests moving without unnecessary delays.
On a busy day, even small pauses can affect how quickly an attraction loads. Eliminating those moments may not seem significant for one ride cycle, but the time savings can add up over an entire day.
It's another example of Disney looking for ways to improve capacity without changing the attraction itself.
A Small Detail That Fans Will Notice
Most guests probably won't care which rocket they ride.
After all, every vehicle offers essentially the same experience.
Still, plenty of returning visitors enjoyed picking their favorite color or letting their kids choose which rocket looked the most exciting.

Only the boarding process is different.
For Disney, the update represents another operational improvement aimed at increasing efficiency.
For longtime fans, it marks the end of one of the attraction's original features.
After nearly eight years of letting guests choose whichever rocket they wanted, Disney has officially taken that option away in favor of a more organized boarding system. Whether guests embrace the change or miss the old routine, it's now part of the Alien Swirling Saucers experience.
