Disney fans know change is a constant at Walt Disney World, but every once in a while, a group of updates arrives that signals a serious wave of transformation. That’s what we’re looking at now, with Disney confirming three major resort-area shutdowns connected to 2026. These aren’t attraction closures—these are changes that touch the very places guests stay, relax, and recharge.

Disney's Resort-Wide Magic
Staying onsite has always been part of the appeal of a Disney World vacation. Each hotel tells its own story, offers quick transportation to the parks, and provides that “bubble” feeling Disney diehards love.
But when a resort undergoes major refurbishment, the energy of the stay shifts. Disney’s early announcements help guests plan ahead and avoid surprises—especially during a year shaping up to be packed with resort improvements.

Early 2026 Downtime
The first confirmed project hits Disney’s All-Star Sports Resort. The Surfboard Bay Pool and the nearby kiddie pool will be closed from January to late April 2026 while the resort undergoes scheduled work. Since Surfboard Bay is the resort’s main pool, its temporary closure will affect any guests who enjoy spending part of their day relaxing by the water.
Thankfully, Disney has backup plans in place. The Grand Slam Leisure Pool will remain open at All-Star Sports, and Disney will also allow guests to hop over to several pools across the two neighboring All-Star resorts. That includes the Calypso Pool, Piano Pool, and kiddie pool at All-Star Music, plus the Fantasia Pool, Duck Pond Pool, and kiddie pool at All-Star Movies.
This shared-access system turns the All-Star resorts into a broader network of available pool areas during the refurbishment period.

Closure Impacts Disney World Guests
A second confirmed closure hits Bay Lake Tower at Disney’s Contemporary Resort. Disney will close the Bay Cove Pool from January 26 through early May 2026. Disney will also shut down the Cove Bar, the water play area, and the whirlpool spa during that time.
Even with those amenities offline, guests still have several places to unwind. The Contemporary’s Bay Lake Pool, the resort’s feature pool, the water play zone, and the whirlpool spa will remain open the entire time. Because Bay Lake Tower and the Contemporary share amenities, the transition is relatively smooth—guests simply shift their pool days to the main side of the resort.

A New Project Approaches
The final update isn’t officially scheduled yet, but the project's scale makes future downtime unavoidable. Disney has announced a significant expansion coming to the Meadow Swimmin’ Pool area at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground, which will bring a new zero-entry pool, expanded deck, and a tennis court, plus two pickleball courts.
These additions mean the existing pool area will eventually need to be closed for construction. Many expect that closure could begin sometime in 2026, though Disney has not released specific dates. Guests planning a rustic getaway at Fort Wilderness should keep an eye out for official updates in the coming months.

Preparing for a Busy Year of Updates
Disney World continues to evolve in significant ways. These resort shutdowns show that change reaches far beyond the parks. Many refurbishments are planned for 2026. Guests should check Disney’s refurbishment schedule before booking to avoid any disruptions. This helps ensure their resort matches their vacation plans.
