When the Disney Skyliner debuted in 2019, it quickly became one of the most popular transportation methods at Walt Disney World. The gondola system provides stunning aerial views while offering a fast and convenient way to travel between EPCOT, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and select resorts. However, as much as fans would love to see the Skyliner expand to other parts of Disney property, logistical challenges make that idea nearly impossible. Luckily, Disney offers several other transportation options that make getting around the parks a breeze.

Monorail: The Original Disney Transportation Icon
Long before the Skyliner, the Monorail was the go-to mode of futuristic transportation at Disney World. Operating since 1971, the Monorail connects Magic Kingdom to several deluxe resorts and also provides transportation to EPCOT. While it's a fan favorite, the Monorail hasn't seen an expansion since EPCOT’s opening in 1982, largely due to the complexity and cost of building new tracks.
Buses: The Most Widespread Option
If you’ve ever visited Disney World, chances are you’ve taken a bus at least once. Disney’s bus fleet services all parks, resorts, and Disney Springs, making it the most widely available transportation option. Buses run regularly throughout the day, but wait times and crowded conditions can be an issue—especially during peak hours.
Boat Transportation: A Relaxing Alternative
Disney World’s waterways offer a unique way to get around. Magic Kingdom guests can take a ferry from the Transportation and Ticket Center, while smaller boats provide access to resorts like Wilderness Lodge, Polynesian Village Resort, and Grand Floridian. Over near EPCOT and Hollywood Studios, the Friendship Boats serve resorts like BoardWalk, Yacht Club, and Beach Club. While not the fastest option, boat rides offer a peaceful break from the chaos of the parks.

Walking Paths: The Best-Kept Secret
Disney World has several walking paths that make park-hopping easier. The walkway between EPCOT and Hollywood Studios is a scenic alternative to the Skyliner, while guests at the Contemporary Resort can walk directly to Magic Kingdom. For those staying at EPCOT-area resorts, the World Showcase entrance provides quick access to the park without waiting for transportation.
Minnie Vans and Ride-Share Services
For those looking for a more private and direct option, Disney offers Minnie Vans through the Lyft app. These vehicles are driven by Cast Members and provide comfortable rides anywhere on Disney property. Standard ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft are also available, often providing the quickest way to travel between locations.
Why Expanding the Skyliner Isn’t Feasible
While the Skyliner is beloved by guests, its expansion faces serious hurdles. Magic Kingdom is already well-served by the Monorail and ferries, making an additional gondola route unnecessary. Animal Kingdom, on the other hand, is located far from the current Skyliner system, and adding a route would require navigating through large stretches of undeveloped land. Additionally, the Skyliner frequently shuts down due to weather concerns, making an expensive expansion less practical.

What’s Next for Disney Transportation?
Although a Skyliner expansion seems unlikely, Disney is constantly improving its transportation network. Enhanced bus routes, new boat services, and potential new walking paths could be part of the resort’s long-term plans. Regardless of what the future holds, one thing is certain—there will always be plenty of ways to travel around Disney World and experience the magic.
