Disney Will Change Course on Animation If Teased ‘Frozen 3’ Plot Comes True

Disney’s Frozen franchise is entering a new phase, one that stretches across film, theme parks, and evolving character arcs. More than ten years after its debut, the story of Arendelle is still expanding, with multiple sequels in development and new experiences drawing fans deeper into its world.

The original Frozen film arrived in 2013 and quickly exceeded expectations, earning $1.28 billion worldwide and reshaping the landscape for Disney animation. Its follow-up, Frozen II (2019), went even further, reaching $1.45 billion globally and reinforcing the franchise’s place at the top tier of Disney’s portfolio.

Equally significant was its cultural footprint. Idina Menzel’s “Let It Go” became a defining song of the era, winning an Academy Award for Best Original Song and helping elevate Elsa and Anna (Kristen Bell) into enduring icons. The films also marked a shift in storytelling priorities, focusing less on romance and more on relationships between family members, particularly the bond between sisters.

Disney confirmed plans to continue the Frozen saga soon after Bob Iger resumed his role as CEO in November 2022. Alongside other major animated properties, Frozen was officially set for further installments.

At D23, Jennifer Lee offered fans an early look at Frozen III through concept art featuring Anna and Elsa traveling across a new environment on unfamiliar creatures. The imagery suggested a story that pushes beyond the boundaries established in earlier films.

Lee explained that the narrative following Frozen II is too large for a single installment, indicating that it will span two films. Although Frozen 4 has yet to receive a formal release announcement, prior comments from Iger—made during the 2023 debut of World of Frozen at Hong Kong Disneyland—suggest that the studio is already thinking in those terms.

Frozen III is now slated for November 2027, moving from its initial 2026 timeframe. The Thanksgiving release slot remains a strategic choice for Disney, given its track record of success.

Hints about the franchise’s direction are also emerging through Disney Experiences. A Disney+ Insider video tied to Disneyland Paris’ World of Frozen shows Jennifer Lee and co-director Trent Correy visiting during the Snowflower Festival.

During the segment, Lee engages with Queen Anna and raises the topic of her relationship with Kristoff (Jonathan Groff). Referencing their engagement at the end of Frozen II, Lee asks about wedding plans—a question that sparks an enthusiastic response.

Anna reveals that Olaf and Kristoff are organizing a major surprise linked to the festival. As the conversation concludes, Lee turns to Correy and remarks, “We’re all going,” effectively extending the invitation to viewers. Correy echoed the excitement, noting he is “really excited” for what Frozen III will deliver.

Should the wedding become part of Frozen III or its follow-up, it would represent a rare moment for modern Disney Animation. The studio has not featured a wedding between primary characters in a theatrical release since The Princess and the Frog in 2009.

That film concluded with Tiana (Anika Noni Rose) and Prince Naveen (Bruno Campos) marrying in a ceremony led by Mama Odie (Jenifer Lewis). Although Tangled Ever After (2012) later depicted Rapunzel (Mandy Moore) and Flynn Rider (Zachary Levi) getting married, the short film is not considered part of the official feature canon.

Over the past decade, Disney Animation has largely explored other themes, from the found-family dynamics in Big Hero 6 and Wreck-It Ralph to the multigenerational storytelling in Encanto and the personal journey at the center of Moana. Frozen played a major role in that evolution, making a return to a central romantic milestone particularly noteworthy.

While the release date is set, Frozen III is still taking shape behind the scenes. Josh Gad shared in late 2025 that recording sessions had not yet begun and that the cast had not heard any songs from the upcoming film.

That changed in February 2026, when Gad confirmed he had started recording. He described the project as “the grandest we’ve ever done,” pointing to a story of considerable scale. According to Gad, the scope may explain why Disney is telling the story across multiple films, offering reassurance that the continuation is justified.

Frozen’s presence continues to grow across multiple platforms. Its Broadway adaptation, which premiered in 2018, brought the story to live audiences, while merchandise, games, and other media keep the characters in constant circulation.

The franchise has also become a cornerstone of Disney Experiences worldwide. Attractions such as Frozen Ever After at Walt Disney World, Anna and Elsa’s Frozen Journey at Tokyo DisneySea, and the World of Frozen lands in Hong Kong Disneyland and Disneyland Paris illustrate its global reach.

Beyond its commercial success, Frozen continues to generate discussion about representation and character development, particularly regarding Elsa’s future. These ongoing conversations highlight how the franchise remains part of the cultural landscape. With Frozen III, a likely Frozen 4, and narrative developments that could reshape its characters’ journeys, Disney’s long-running saga shows no signs of slowing down.

When he’s not thinking about the Magic Kingdom, Thomas is usually reading a book, becoming desperately obsessed with fictional characters, or baking something delicious (his favorite is chocolate cake -- to bake and to eat). He's a dreamer and grew up on Mulan saving the world, Jim Hawkins soaring through the stars, and Padmé Amidala fighting a Nexu. At the Parks, he loves to ride Everest, stroll down Main Street with an overstuffed pin lanyard around his neck, and eat as many Mickey-shaped ice creams as possible. His favorite character is Han Solo (yes, he did shoot first), and his favorite TV show is Buffy the Vampire Slayer except when it's One Tree Hill. He loves sandy beach walks, forest hikes, and foodie days out in the Big City. Thomas lives in England, UK, with his fiancée, baby, and their dog, a Border Collie called Luna.
