Disney World Closing 40-Year-Old EPCOT Restaurant This September

Disney World vacations rarely stay exactly as planned. Attractions close for refurbishment, entertainment schedules change, and restaurants occasionally disappear from the lineup for weeks or months.

This September, EPCOT guests will need to prepare for one of those changes.

Coral Reef Restaurant will temporarily close beginning September 8, 2026, taking away one of EPCOT's most distinctive dining experiences. Disney expects the restaurant to reopen later in 2026, although it hasn't announced a specific date.

For anyone hoping to eat there during an upcoming vacation, consider this your reminder to check those dates carefully.

Coral Reef Restaurant Is Closing September 8

Coral Reef isn't a new addition to EPCOT.

The restaurant has been around for roughly 40 years, giving generations of Disney World guests the chance to eat beside the massive aquarium inside The Seas pavilion.

That setting is what makes this particular closure noteworthy.

Coral Reef's dining room features oversized windows looking into the aquarium, allowing guests to watch marine animals while they eat. Sea turtles, rays, tropical fish, and sharks can all pass by during a meal.

It's a completely different atmosphere from most Disney World restaurants.

Starting September 8, however, guests will temporarily lose access to it.

Disney has not revealed what work will take place during the closure. The company has only confirmed that Coral Reef will close temporarily and is expected to return later this year.

How Long Will Coral Reef Stay Closed?

That's the big question Disney hasn't answered.

There is currently no exact reopening date.

Disney says Coral Reef is expected to reopen later in 2026, which gives the company several months to bring the restaurant back. It has not provided further details about the reason for the closure or what guests might notice when it returns.

That makes September vacation planning particularly important.

Anyone visiting before September 8 still has an opportunity to experience Coral Reef ahead of the shutdown. Guests arriving afterward should plan on eating somewhere else unless Disney announces an earlier-than-expected reopening.

Fortunately, EPCOT has plenty of alternatives.

EPCOT Guests Still Have Plenty To Eat

Losing Coral Reef doesn't mean EPCOT suddenly becomes difficult for dining.

Quite the opposite.

World Showcase alone gives guests restaurants inspired by 11 different countries. EPCOT also offers heavily themed experiences elsewhere in the park, including Space 220 and Garden Grill Restaurant.

Still, those restaurants can't completely duplicate Coral Reef.

Its appeal isn't simply the menu. It's being able to sit down for lunch or dinner while marine life swims past the windows beside you.

That's why families have continued returning to the restaurant over the years.

September 8 Will Be a Busy Day for Disney World Changes

Coral Reef isn't the only Disney World experience affected on September 8.

Cool KIDS' SUMMER is scheduled to end that day, and Disney hasn't announced whether the seasonal offering will return in 2027.

Typhoon Lagoon will also begin its seasonal closure on September 8. Blizzard Beach will remain available while Typhoon Lagoon is closed.

For guests visiting around that date, there will be several changes to keep track of.

Coral Reef may be among the most noticeable.

Coral Reef Isn't Going Away Permanently

There is one important piece of good news.

Disney has not announced the permanent closure of Coral Reef Restaurant.

This is a temporary shutdown, and Disney currently expects the restaurant to reopen before the end of 2026.

That should offer some reassurance to longtime EPCOT visitors.

For roughly four decades, Coral Reef has offered something that is difficult to find anywhere else at Disney World. Guests can leave the crowds outside, sit down for a meal, and watch an enormous underwater environment unfold just beyond the glass.

Beginning September 8, they'll have to wait to experience it again.

Disney hasn't told us exactly how long that wait will last.

For now, anyone hoping for one more meal at Coral Reef before the closure should circle September 8 on the calendar. Once that date arrives, one of EPCOT's longtime restaurants will be unavailable until Disney is ready to welcome diners back.
