A routine evening at the “Happiest Place on Earth” took an unexpected turn this week.
Disneyland Park — the original Disney theme park in Anaheim, California — has built its reputation on precision. Attractions operate through meticulously engineered systems designed to minimize disruption, even when thousands of guests flood the park each day.

Still, like any theme park with dozens of complex rides operating simultaneously, incidents occasionally happen.
Disneyland’s history includes a handful of high-profile ride malfunctions. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad once derailed at the California park, injuring several guests and tragically killing one rider. Space Mountain has also experienced derailments that forced large-scale evacuations.

More recently, WEB SLINGERS: A Spider-Man Adventure at neighboring Disney California Adventure temporarily halted operations during an incident that prompted guests to leave the attraction mid-experience.
Most incidents are minor — delays, technical resets, or occasional evacuations. Yet even small disruptions quickly capture attention in a park where smooth operations are part of the brand.
Yesterday evening, one of Disneyland’s oldest attractions joined that list.
Disneyland Guests Evacuate Tomorrowland Ride After Car Leaves Track
Autopia has been a staple of Tomorrowland since Disneyland first opened in 1955.
The attraction allows guests to steer miniature gasoline-powered cars along a guided track. The vehicles, originally designed by legendary Walt Disney Imagineer Bob Gurr, run along a center rail that keeps them from fully leaving the roadway.

Despite the guiding rail, Autopia has experienced derailments over the years.
Earlier this year, a video circulated online showing Disney cast members pushing a red Autopia vehicle back onto the track after it veered into a grassy area beside the ride. Guests in the queue were also seen evacuating the area.
That incident followed another derailment reported during the summer of 2025.
According to Disneyland guests online, a similar situation unfolded again last night.
Images shared on Reddit show one Autopia vehicle turned sideways on the track. The car appeared to block another rail, preventing vehicles behind it from continuing.
The situation forced guests to evacuate the attraction on foot.
Car accident at Autopia today. We were in traffic for 15 minutes and ended up walking off the ride. 😭

Some guests reportedly received a complimentary Lightning Lane after leaving the ride. The service, typically sold as a paid add-on, allows parkgoers to bypass standby queues at select attractions throughout Disneyland Resort.
The images quickly sparked debate online — particularly over how such a derailment could happen on a ride designed to prevent exactly that scenario.
“That rail is so massive both in width and height,” said one user. “Do the cars even go fast enough that they could hit that hard? I mean I’ve been dead stopped and rear ended by a-holes goofing off on that ride but never had something like this happen.”
Another Reddit commenter offered a more colorful reaction.
“I can’t even imagine how f***ing hard they had to hit the car in order to set it free…which by the way has always been a dream of mine on this ride.”

Some guests speculated that repeated collisions between cars may have played a role.
“I was there earlier and kept hearing the announcement about not bumping the car in front of you. And I hadn’t ever heard it be so pronounced (I’ve only ridden it once…so idk),” one parkgoer said.
“Maybe this was why? Lol. I just know my ears picked up on it and I glanced over to see what was happening. Don’t know what time it was. Sometime this evening.”
The Future of Autopia Remains Uncertain
Autopia’s long history makes it one of Disneyland’s most recognizable attractions.
At the same time, similar rides have quietly disappeared from other Disney parks in recent years.
Hong Kong Disneyland closed its version of Autopia in 2016 to make room for the planned Avengers Quinjet Experience attraction. That project was later canceled, and a new Spider-Man ride is now slated for the location instead.

Tokyo Disneyland also removed its own version of the ride.
The park’s Grand Circuit Raceway closed in 2017 as part of a major expansion. The area now houses the Fantasyland expansion anchored by the attraction Enchanted Tale of Beauty and the Beast.
Autopia still exists in several Disney parks.
Guests can find a version of the ride at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, where it operates as Tomorrowland Speedway. Disneyland Paris also continues to operate its own version of the classic driving attraction.
However, Disneyland’s version has increasingly drawn criticism from fans.

Tomorrowland itself has faced scrutiny for feeling outdated — a recurring complaint from Disney park enthusiasts who argue that the land no longer represents a believable vision of the future.
The presence of a mid-century-style highway attraction inside a land meant to represent “tomorrow” has become a frequent point of debate.
Earlier this year, an insider report suggested that Disney had quietly canceled a planned revamp for Tomorrowland at Disneyland.
For now, Autopia remains in operation.
