Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park has officially retired one of its small animals, marking the end of a four-year run inside the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail. The update followed the discovery of a change in the health of the Cairo Spiny Mouse, a species that has long called the Africa section of Walt Disney World Resort’s fourth theme park home.
Cairo Spiny Mouse Retires From Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail
The retirement was first reported on November 20, when WDWNT shared that the mouse’s enclosure in the indoor section of the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail had been covered with a beige tarp. Disney cast members on duty reportedly informed guests that the animal had been moved to Rafiki’s Planet Watch after showing signs of labored breathing. The relocation places the mouse closer to Disney’s veterinary facility, where wildlife specialists can give it immediate care when needed.

While the average lifespan of Cairo Spiny Mice in the wild is not documented, the species typically lives up to four years in captivity. The mouse residing at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park has already reached that milestone, making its move to Rafiki’s Planet Watch both timely and appropriate given its age and condition. Disney Park guests visiting the facility may be able to observe animal care procedures through viewing windows, although sightings of specific species are not guaranteed.
What’s Next for the Exhibit Space?

Walt Disney World Resort has not announced whether another animal will replace the Cairo Spiny Mouse in its previous habitat. Over the years, the enclosure has housed several spiny mice at once, as shown in the photos below, dating back to 2017.

For now, the space remains covered, waiting for its next resident or a possible removal altogether.
